La emigración es un fenómeno social que ocurre en el mundo entero y su causa fundamental es la busqueda de mejorías económicas. Emigrar no es cosa fácil, cualquiera no está preparado para eso. Es una decisión seria que implica asumir las consecuencias y yo estaba dispuesta a asumirlas. Para que yo pudiera hacer realidad mi sueño de salir de Cuba, mi madre tuvo que vender nuestra casa, que era una casa grande de tres cuartos, y comprarse una casa pequeña y entonces poder darme el dinero para comprar pasajes y pagar travesías. Fue un gran sacrificio que ella hizo por mí.

Emigration is a social phenomenon that occurs throughout the world, and its fundamental cause is the search for economic improvement. Emigrating is not easy; not everyone is prepared for it. It is a serious decision that involves accepting the consequences, and I was willing to accept them. For me to make my dream of leaving Cuba a reality, my mother had to sell our house—a large three-bedroom home—and buy a small one to be able to give me the money to buy tickets and pay for the journey. It was a great sacrifice she made for me.
Vender una casa tampoco es cosa sencilla, puede demorar meses o años, pero nosotros no demoramos tanto, enseguida apareció un comorador porque la casa en verdad tenía muy buenas condiciones. Una vez que se hizo el papeleo burocrático y tuvimos el dinero en las manos, ahí mismo empezó la preparación del viaje. Lo primero era conseguir los pasajes. Empecé a vender casi todas mis ropas y le di algunas a mis amigas. Mi novio tenía de antes su dinero para viajar y espero por mi para poder irnos juntos.
Selling a house is not a simple matter either; it can take months or years. But we didn't take that long; a buyer appeared immediately because the house was truly in very good condition. Once the bureaucratic paperwork was done and we had the money in hand, the preparation for the trip began right then. The first thing was to get the tickets. I started selling almost all my clothes and gave some to my friends. My boyfriend already had his own money saved for the trip and waited for me so we could leave together.
A nosotros nos tocó una travesías poco convenional porque, en el momento en que compramos del boleto, no había otra opción. Mi novio y yo tuvimos que comprar 4 boletos de avión y volar a tres países diferentes antes de llegar a Nicaragua. Salí de Cuba el 14 de enero de 2025,(un día antes del cumpleaños de mi hermano), junto a mi novio y rumbo a México como destino final. Siempre tuvimos claro que ya no había tiempo de entrar a USA, de manera que México era el lugar para nosotros.
We ended up with a rather unconventional route because, at the time we bought the ticket, there was no other option. My boyfriend and I had to buy 4 plane tickets and fly to three different countries before reaching Nicaragua. I left Cuba on January 14, 2025 (one day before my brother's birthday), together with my boyfriend, heading to Mexico as our final destination. It was always clear to us that there was no time to try to enter the USA anymore, so Mexico was the place for us.
Y cuando llegó el gran día, mochila al hombro, con lo básico, nos fuimos al aeropuerto con la familia de mi novio y la mía. Allí estuvimos varias horas antes despegar. Besos, lágrimas, abrazos y consejos eran el "plato fuerte" de aquel difícil momento. Cuando ya tuvimos que entrar para hacer el checking, fue que el "plato fuerte" llegó a su climax. Mi madre me encomendó a la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre y prefiero no detenerme y recordar mucho más ese momento, ya he llorado bastante.
And when the big day arrived, backpack on my shoulder, with just the basics, we went to the airport with my boyfriend's family and mine. We were there for several hours before takeoff. Kisses, tears, hugs, and advice were the "main course" of that difficult moment. When we finally had to go in for check-in, that's when the "main course" reached its climax. My mother entrusted me to the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, and I prefer not to dwell and remember that moment too much more—I've already cried enough.
En cuatro aviones tuvimos que montarnos durante largas horas de viaje. No era mi primera experiencia en el aire, pero esta era diferente, iba a salir finalmentede Cuba. De La Habana salimos rumbo a Lima, Perú. Esa fue nuestra primera escala. Allí estuvimos unas horas en el aeropuerto a la espera de nuestro próximo vuelo. La estancia en ese lugar fue de total deslumbramiento, la belleza, el lujo y el glamour eran descomunales. Comimos algo y recorrimos tiendas (solo para ver).
We had to board four planes during long hours of travel. It wasn't my first time in the air, but this was different; I was finally going to leave Cuba. We left Havana for Lima, Peru. That was our first layover. We spent a few hours at the airport there waiting for our next flight. Our stay in that place was one of total awe; the beauty, luxury, and glamour were immense. We ate something and wandered through shops (just to look).
Mi mamá instaló en su teléfono una aplicación de GPS para aviones y seguía todos nuestro recorrido por el cielo. En cada aeropuerto hacíamos video llamadas a la familia para que supieran que estábamos bien. Luego seguimos viaje para Guayaquil, Ecuador. Otra maravilla de aeropuerto y otras tantas horas de espera hasta el próximo vuelo rumbo a San Salvador, El Salvador. Por último tomamos el avión que nos llevaría a Managua, Nicaragua, donde llegamos el día 16.
My mom installed a GPS app for airplanes on her phone and followed our entire journey through the sky. At each airport, we made video calls to the family so they would know we were okay. Then we continued our journey to Guayaquil, Ecuador. Another wonderful airport and several more hours of waiting until the next flight to San Salvador, El Salvador. Finally, we took the plane that would take us to Managua, Nicaragua, where we arrived on the 16th.
Cuando al fin arribamos a Nicaragua, nos estaba esperando un amigo que nos llevó a su casa donde nos bañamos, comimos y descansamos unas horas, para luego seguir nuestra incierta travesía por varios países de América Central. Por fin, habíamos vencido la primera etapa de nuestra travesía. Todavía pienso en eso y me asombro, fueron cuatro aviones, ufff. Después continuamos viaje para Honduras y Guatemala por carretera hasta Tapachula, Mexico.
When we finally arrived in Nicaragua, a friend was waiting for us who took us to his house where we showered, ate, and rested for a few hours, before continuing our uncertain journey through several Central American countries. We had finally overcome the first stage of our journey. I still think about it and am amazed—four planes, phew. After that, we continued our trip by road to Honduras and Guatemala, all the way to Tapachula, Mexico.
Nos montamos en guaguas, camionetas, autos modernos y al final en un taxi que fue nuestro ultimo transporte. Independiente de la lógica preocupación por esa travesía incierta, la pasamos bien, Dios estaba a nuestro lado y no permitió que hubiera el más mínimo inconveniente. Por fortuna no tuvimos que cruzar la peligrosa selva del Darién como otros. Hubo momentos en que nos sentimos verdaderos turistas mochileros que iban disfrutando de su recorrido exploratorio. Conocimos a muchas personas, cubanos que iban en nuestra misma dirección y con quienes compartimos, risas, historias y comida.
We rode in buses, vans, modern cars, and finally in a taxi which was our last transport. Despite the logical worry about that uncertain journey, we had a good time; God was by our side and did not allow the slightest inconvenience. Fortunately, we did not have to cross the dangerous Darién jungle like others. There were moments when we felt like real backpacker tourists enjoying their exploratory trip. We met many people, Cubans who were going in our same direction, and with whom we shared laughter, stories, and food.
Llegamos a México el 19 de Enero, un día antes de que Trump asumiera el cargo de presidente de los Estados Unidos de América. Allí nos esperaba mi suegro que se había ido antes, por suerte llegamos con renta garantizada. Fue ese día cuando respiramos aliviados de veras. Y aquí estamos, trabajando y haciendo trámites legales, pero construyendo una nueva vida llena de ilusiones, sueños y esperanzas.
We arrived in Mexico on January 19, one day before Trump assumed the office of President of the United States of America. My father-in-law, who had left earlier, was waiting for us there; luckily, we arrived with guaranteed accommodation. That was the day when we truly breathed a sigh of relief. And here we are, working and handling legal paperwork, but building a new life full of dreams, illusions, and hopes.
