New Year good luck
It's an old Germanic tradition to cut small branches on December 4 (because of a mythical story about St Barbara) and force them to bloom.

Usually it's fruit trees. We picked a bunch of things, but the only ones that bloomed were the rhododendron banches.
They are supposed to bloom by Christmas Eve for the story, but mine bloomed by New Years, so I figured that I still the got the good luck for 2025, right?
According to legend, Barbara’s father, a believer in the Greco-Roman religious system shut her away in a tower, hoping that isolation would make his daughter see sense about believing in Christianity. Beyond his personal prejudice was the political reality that any association with the outlawed Christian religion would hurt his grain business.
On her way to her tower prison, she supposedly caught her robe on a branch. She broke off the branch and took it with her, standing it in a vessel full of water, where it blossomed exactly on the day she was sentenced to death. It is thought to be a symbol of good luck for the next year if the buds on your ‘Barbara Zweige’ blossom by Christmas Eve.
Poor Saint Barbara was tortured and beheaded but I think the branches are a beautiful tradition.

The bush only blooms in springtime out in my yard. Bringing it in the warm house tricked it into thinking that spring had arrived.

that is a rather sad story for such a beautiful tradition. But at least now you only continue the blooming part of the tradition, and not locking away the daughter part.

These are quite beautiful, but the story is sad and tragic. Reminds us that to be beautiful sorrows and pain are part of the process...

I knew St. Barbara’s story but not the Germanic tradition about the branches. It’s a beautiful metaphor to start a new year with a new life.
I take good luck any where I can find it so yeah that counts! 🙂 I'm fascinated by propagating plants from cuttings. We grow our garden from seeds and I guess I did get a couple of plants from some of my family in Kansas last year but mostly we have been uncertain about cuttings.
I was totally surprised that the rhododendron bloomed. I had no idea they could be forced.
I'm sure some plants are easier to grow from cuttings than others, but it might be worth a try.
The world sure was not kind in the past, nor today sadly. Saint Barbara met a horrific end... Beautiful booms! Those are really beautiful!
And on his way home, after killing his daughter the father was struck by lightning and died. Swift justice!
For torturing and killing his daughter that seems like a rather painless way to die. It was justice, but not an eye for an eye! lol
She did become the patron Saint of miners because of the lightning blast!
