Male ringnecked pheasants

The Ring-necked Pheasant is a large, chicken-like bird with a long, pointed tail. They are not native to North America but we're introduced here from Asia in the 19th century.

Male ringnecked pheasants are brightly colored, have blue-green heads, white neck rings, red wattles.

Oddly enough this one seen in Chicago at the Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary. Usually they can be seen along roadsides and in farm fields feeding on insects and grains.

I couldn't decide if I should post this photo here, or save it for a Shadow Contest cover photo!

Or the king! I don't have a photo of a female, but they are smaller and brown, not at all colorful.

This bird's colour looks like a Peacock. This is looking so amazing.

The contrast of colors that this bird has really steals attention. Its walking pose is also very interesting, full of confidence.

There is a nearby game farm that raises pheasants on a large scale and sells to hunting preserves and restaurants. Last year a tornado struck our town and several pens were destroyed. There were many birds that were freed. I expect that this summer we will see a lot more pheasants in the fields!

It is amazing how in animal nature male individuals always show great beauty with respect to females, of course corresponding to mating system and so on.

These photos are very beautiful. And I think that one you refer to would have worked very well within Shadow Hunters.

I have a different photo to use tomorrow for the Shadow Contest, so I decided to use this one here. It is a great shadow though, isn't it?

Yes it is. I think it is excellent because it has a beautiful definition and the visual angle allows you to have a suggestive composition. The shadow allows us to understand the animal described in the silhouette and to me it seems to me in that duality of positive - negative antinomy. That's why I said it worked well in the Shadow Hunters Contest. I believe that portraying a shadow is more than capturing the beauty of the form, it is also about provoking with the suggestion, with the discourse of the content, to mean. It is an entirely poetic matter

Ringnecked pheasants we common where I grew up in the plains of Kansas. People came from all over the midWest for pheasant season. Made us locals nervous lol better to wait a bit after opening weekend to venture out in the fields 😅

Same with deer season in Wisconsin. The kids were not allowed to play in the woods and I tied a giant fluorescent orange ribbon around our golden retrievers collar.
There is a local Game Farm in the area that raises pheasants and it was struck by the tornado last year. I expect that we will see a huge increase in the Pheasant population in local fields this year

They are definitely beautiful, although somewhat gaudy!
I don't see them here at my house, they prefer farm fields and grassy areas.

These birds once lived naturally in Cuba in large flocks.
Unfortunately, they are practically extinct here. Only a few specimens remain on specific farms.

Beautiful photos Melinda! Many, many years ago I had a Silver and a Golden Pheasant. They were pets but not the holding kind, just the pretty to look at kind. Seeing your photos made me think of them. 💖

@deerjay! How wonderful to hear from you! I have seen those birds too, but only in zoo type displays. It is so nice of you to leave a comment here. Hope all is well with you.
