Labor Day cookout

Labor Day is a federal holiday in the US and as it is a 3 day weekend and kids go back to school here September 2nd, it is the last busy weekend of summer,. Because Wisconsin is a tourist state many businesses depended on high school kids to remain on staff for this busy weekend as tourists travel to enjoy the long weekend, so the start of school is after the holiday.

As a kid I disliked Labor Day weekend. It meant the end of summertime freedom and the unstructured days of summer.

Cookouts are a traditional way to enjoy the day and the weather was perfect! My kids cooked out on their balcony in the city.

Toasted buns with melted pepper jack cheese for the turkey burgers and grilled sweet potatoes.

The potatoes were seasoned with butter, maple syrup, brown sugar and cinnamon and cooked on a grill pan to prevent them from falling through the grates.

There is quick pickled cabbage salad in the bowls.

A mix of vinegar, sugar, salt, vegetable oil, paprika, cardamon, turmeric. Left overnight in the fridge and the salad is ready to serve at the cookout.

Summertime weather is likely to remain for several more weeks and I will be sympathizing with all the kids sitting at desks in classrooms and wishing they were outdoors!

All photos are from my family albums.

Please do not share outside of Hive.

Ah yes! We call it Labour Day up here but same thing. For us, we usually take advantage of the last summer long weekend to go camping somewhere with friends. Head to a cottage if that is on the table.

I have a whole post loaded up full of this weekends adventures and will see if I can get to it tonight.

Looks like you had a delicious long weekend and hopefully you are denying the end of summer til the end of September like me!

Colour/Color Labour/Labor... Not sure why American English drops the U.

I'm quite envious of your holiday at the lake!

Food looks good. I had a long fun time this weekend out of town and start heading back home today. Yes when were school age kids it was the end of the summer vacation. I looked foward to it to see some I hadn't seen all summer. That only lasted a short while than had to hope Xmas and such got here quickly, haha.

Your happy times on the occasion of Labor Day in the United States were very beautiful and natural. With the great weather, sometimes the children go back to school to attend to education. However, mothers are able to lead the right activities of responsible children. Today's event is different and this wonderful turkey marker and sweet potato are unique in this beautiful traditional food. Thanks for sharing.

In Russia, Labor Day is celebrated on May 1. We are told that this is an international holiday, and in the USA, all workers celebrate this day.

We also call May 1st the day of the beginning of picnics!
