January at the beach

Going out in below freezing temperatures requires getting bundled up in winter apparel. A warm coat, hats, scarves, gloves and wool socks become the attire of choice!

But even a polar vortex doesn't keep northeners stuck indoors. Some people even take a walk to the beach, where the wind coming off the lake is particularly brutal.

Montrose Beach and Dog Park has a very different look and feel about it to the place it is on a hot summer day!

What at first might appear to be frothy Waves is actually ice piled up along the shore of Lake Michigan. There is no one playing in the sand and no picnics spread out on blankets. Not a single beach volley game is taking place.

When outdoors in these conditions you must be wary of frostbite. Unprotected skin and underlying tissue can freeze and result in permanent damage.

When the temperature is zero degrees Fahrenheit or below, it takes about 30 minutes for exposed skin to get frostbite. At 15 degrees below zero with even a little bit of wind, frostbite is possible within 15 minutes.

But even with the temperatures well below freezing there are still people, dogs, and a few birds out to take in the outdoor sights that nature provides in winter.

Bundle up!

That temperature is beautiful, I always prefer the cold, you can be at home drinking a coffee and staying warm, but with the heat... you just have to endure it. ☹️

The cold will be much. We don't experience such weather here. Can I even survive in this kind of environment? Haha

This weather can be quite tedious, makes it very difficult to move around wht with chilly winds and snow blowing up from everywhere. On the bright side we get beautiful scenes like the above, nature gives beauty at a certain price. Stay warm...

Wow, amazing. A special season, nature provides something amazing to enjoy and immortalize. In my place there is no season like that, there is only the rainy season which makes it muddy everywhere. You are very lucky to be there to enjoy it firsthand.

I like the cold but from afar, because my allergy makes it unbearable. Your photos are very beautiful, I have never seen snow but it must be impressive.

You can always meet interesting people on the subway.
We have an abnormally warm winter this year. The thermometer is now showing +2 degrees, with sleet underfoot.
What will February be like? What will spring be like?

We are getting extremely cold temperatures right now. Not much snow at all, though.

Oh, what a strange winter you have, an unusual one. I was especially surprised that there is no snow anywhere except the shore.

We have gotten very little snow this year. Cold temps and then it warms up and the snow melts. Very cold temperatures right now.

I must say that I have respect for people's adaptive capacity, I would die in that cold. 🥶

Then winter is too harsh there. Despite this, some people are walking and enjoying the winter landscape. If I would been in this weather for too long, I might have forgotten what summer was. The pictures were amazing.

Being from the other side of the planet, this frozen beach seems like a different world to me. I can feel the cold. Nice shots.

Very cool pictures! Way too cold for my blood thank you. Such irony since I used to be a ski instructor in my younger years!

We have bundling up figured out - thats for sure. I have a stack of clothes and decide how many layers based on the temps each morning 🙂 We can walk along a more wooded path when the wind chill is bad. It gives us more shelter from the wind. Love the "ice dunes" haha but I think I would rather have the warm sand dunes in summertime.
