Ice Age Trail
The Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin follows the terminal moraine left behind 12,000 years ago as the ice age ended and glaciers receded.
The hiking trail is still a work in progress, but nearly 700 miles of the Ice Age Trail is open for public use. There are over 100 completed segments that are joined together by routes that may take you out on quiet rural roads and highways and make it possible to hike the entire 1,200-mile trail across the state.
Where the trail runs through my town, much of it follows a paved bike path, but here are some photos taken on the section of trail as it leaves town.
Glaciers can pick up rocks and transport them over long distances. This rock is called a glacial erratic.
There are many landscape features created by glaciers; drumlins, eskers, kettles, kames, bogs, streams and a multitude of lakes were left behind as the glacier receded and many of these features can be found along the Ice Age Trail.
There is an abundance of wildflowers, plants, berries and insects.
elderberries - many of these are now at my house and will become jelly
blackberries-some ripe ones for atop my morning yogurt
Hope you enjoyed this photo tour of a walk through a bit the natural area of southern Wisconsin

Beatufiul looking trail 😍 I'm always taken aback with how much Wisconsin looks like Vermont. After I finished mowing yeasterday, I walked along the edge of the forest/my yard and picked berries. I love blackberries and raspberries with vanilla ice cream 😋
You have much more interesting rocks in Vermont. Except for erratics, we mostly have limestone here.
Vanilla ice cream and vanilla pudding as well!

All the trees are looking very beautiful. Seeing the natural scenery makes a person very happy. I also went to such a beautiful place with my friend this morning.
All of us need time out in nature!

Yeah you are right.
I thought I'll be seeing the Ice Age cage or something ☺️

Thank you!
I love such natural places with ancient history. It makes you think about the distant past. Great photos and walk.
Almost impossible to imagine what it must have been like here thousands of years ago when Mammoths were wandering the area!
Your town has amazing views
If I may ask, you mean people come around to carry the rocks when they need
Is that it?
Irratics are rocks that were carried here thousands of years ago when Wisconsin was covered by glaciers. A glacier is a slowly moving mass or river of ice. No people here then.
Beautiful natural places. Like to see such shady places.
Thanks! Being outdoors is important for all of us!
That is so incredibly cool.. never heard of it tbh. Breathtaking photos. Really nice butterfly as well, with what appeats to be blue, white and orange spots? Nothing like a lone mushroom to make the outdoor experience feel even more authentic loool (and of course remind me of my favourite childhood cartoon - the smurfs). When I saw the berries I was flawed.. that is soooo dope!
This one is rather beat up, but the Eastern black swallowtail butterfly is a beauty and is pretty common. It's been a good year to be outdoors. We have had very little rain which equals very few mosquitoes!
A wonderful place! River, berries. Mushrooms. By the way, do you collect mushrooms in the forest?
There are a few I can easily identify and I collect those whenever I find them! I love mushrooms!
👍👍👍
Didn’t know this trail existed. Wow… that’s so cool.
Would be great if it is finished one day.
Beautiful part of the trail you show us. So much to see.
Love the look up at the treetops and all the flowers and butterfly, even a mushroom.
Thanks for sharing.
Have a great evening 😊👋🏻
Much of the trail needs to cross private land and getting landowner permission is sometimes an issue with a project this large. Hopefully the day will come when it is all connected
