Going Antiquing

Antique Resources in Chicago

The store specializes in fine European antiques, with focus on antique lighting fixtures.
You can't walk in off the street, but must ring the bell and wait for the door to be opened for you.

Although I find the items are expensive and don't buy from shops, I do enjoy seeing what they have available.

The prices for these dolls were each near $300.

The tag says Late 19th Century Louis XVI end table with marble top and bronze mounts.
$1500. Unlike new furniture, antiques often appreciate in value.

This Victorian era cut glass lamp has been electrified but was originally an oil lamp. The long dangling pointed crystal prisms helped to refract light.

Antique inkwell desk set

The tag says
circa 1880 Italian Napoleon III Inlaid Brass and Lacquered Mahogany Inkwell
$1,033.00

One compartment holds a small, glass ink bottle and another holds a pounce pot. A pounce pot was used to sprinkle fine powder (like sand or chalk) over ink to speed up drying.

A carved wooden figure, the Blackamoor motif has been used in furniture and decorative arts for centuries, particularly from the 17th through the 19th centuries.

In contemporary times, the Blackamoor is highly controversial. It's widely seen as a problematic symbol due to its origins in colonialism, slavery, and iracial stereotypes.

The Sphinx was revived as an element of Egyptomania following Napoleon's Egyptian campaigns. In the late 18th to early 19th centuries a carved wooden piece like this may have been central on a fireplace mantle with candlesticks on each side. The tag indicates the price is $2900.

These carved stone animals, roaring tiger and drinking elephant, probably flanked a doorway or gate.

Wandering through antique shops give a look back to a different era, culture, and the lives of those who made and used the object before. Each piece has a story to tell.

The prices in a shop like this are outside of my budget, but learning the value gives a good idea of an objects worth if you come across something similar at a garage sale!

Good morning, dear friend @melinda010100

What an interesting store to visit. There are beautiful things there, but as you mentioned, the price isn't for everyone. As a historical attraction, it's wonderful.

Thank you so much for sharing these beauties.

Have a great day.

Most of the antiques I own are family heirlooms or purchased years ago at bargain prices compared to what they sell for today!

The items in the store all looked nice and attractive. The prices were also very sweet. But they seemed to be worth the price. Only this doll looked cheap, but it was worth more than my cell phone😅

If only wishes are horses....
I have really fed my eyes and wondered how they were able to preserve these antiques for century's.
I also love the exposure am getting from such posts.
I use to have this kind of experience when I was representing Rodgers Digital Organs and Samick Pianos.
There are some traditionally handcrafted organs that I've seen .
Such Digital organs have been in existence for decades but yet their sounds will blow your mind.

I'm just relishing this post.
Thank you for sharing. I am happy to read the post 📫 😊 ☺️

Yes, it was, that job gave me great exposure. I met with reps from Rodgers Digital Organs, Yamaha Pianos and others.
I also tried as much as possible to preserve memories of some of the concert times with them at the Muson Centre Lagos.
Oh, it was such a beautiful momentum 😍

I keep relishing those memories. Anything that brings those memories back givrs me joy and excitement.
Once agaim, thank you for sharing those antiques. They are all interesting to see.

Such pretty stuff, I just wish I could afford to buy a bunch of it! The dolls were a bit spooky, but a lot of older ones can be. lol

That crystal lamp is pretty and is the inkwell box. And those gorgeous crystal chandeliers, I would love those, although I have no place to put them in my house! What a cool store they visited!

Great post!

Very few antique shops remain in our side of town, bygone era I too enjoyed seeing the old craftsmanship.

Nice variety on display for those who do enjoy collectors items and have money to spend.
