Flamingos

I have seen flamingos a few times in the wild, but I was never close enough to take good photos.

These Chilian flamingos are at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago Illinois. I learned that in hot weather countries flamingos keep cool by standing in the water and that they do the opposite here and heat their water temperature to 70° so that the flamingos are comfortable even when it is snowing!
They are listed as near threatened.

Flamingos are born with white feathers and the color changes to pink because of the carotenoids in their diet of brine shrimp.

Flamingos sleep standing on one leg with their head resting on their back.

This ring billed gull flew in and seemed to want to pose for a few photos, but more likely he was checking to see if the flamingos had any food he could steal!

Flamingos sleep on one leg? This is the coolest I know about them and it's an awesome bit,,, their colour is stunning!

I read that it requires less energy for them. They lock their leg joints in place and they don't sway as much while they sleep.

Those flamingos look like some classic paintings😍 and I think you are right, this gull is waiting for these flamingos to sleep cause then it will be easy to steal.😅

How are you dear friend @melinda010100 good morning
I love these birds, two beautiful birds that are not seen in the city where I lived, in fact, I never saw any of them personally.
Your photographs, as always, are beautiful.
Have and enjoy a beautiful day

Thank you! I've seen Caribbean flamingos before in the wild. They are native to Mexico, the Caribbean, and the northernmost tip of South America.

Looks like they are very harmful

Great photos 👍 I was fortunate enough to see a Roseate Spoonbill in the Everglades. Same source of the pink color.

It's hard to find wild flamingos anymore. Very few in Florida, but along the South American coast and in some places in the Caribbean I've seen them. Great shots! I'm officially back from my break!

I saw huge flocks of them years ago in Bonaire. I like to imagine they
are still there. Glad to see you here.

I didn't know it was the shrimp that gave them the colour. I thought it was some kind of plant that did it.
