Cold Christmas on Main Street
Before we move much farther into January and Christmas 2024 becomes a memory of Christmas past, I wanted to share these photos taken the weekend before Christmas in Galena, Illinois.
As a Christmas gift to each other my kids stayed for two nights at the Jail Hill Inn. It is the county's old jail that has been restored as a luxury Inn. It has become a favorite place of theirs.
These photos were taken in the early morning hours before the sun came up. It was bitter cold and no one was out on the streets yet.
Galena is my favorite little town in the area. It is about an hours drive from my home and besides being beautiful, there is so much history there.
Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th president of the United States, serving from 1869 to 1877. His father owned a leather shop in town and Ulysses worked there as a young man.
Here he is sitting alone in the cold and dark on a bench on Main Street. He is a bit scary when you come upon him at 5 AM and no one else is around!
There are lots of beautiful Christmas lights and decorated shop windows.
The sun is coming up on what appears to be a cloudy overcast day. The Galena river is quietly behind the dike, and the town will have a peaceful holiday!

I remember your other posts of Galena. It’s a beautiful place with lots of stories to explore. I love the night vision, seems a fairy tail scenario.
The down town is so perfect looks like a movie set. The empty streets and dark sky with the street lights - very cool. And the ghost of Ulysses S. Grant 😆
I like this old setting town specially the church.
Oh, what atmospheric nice photos! Even without snow, the festive atmosphere is perfectly conveyed. It's so beautiful.
We have had a few snowfall, but not much accumulation yet.
Uuhh.. my toes are freezing 🥲 I forgot to wear my socks while walking with you. Dang, Ulysses! I stared at him for a minute and he asked for a cup of hot chocolate 🤦

Hot Chocolate is the best for warming up, but never ever forget to wear heavy wool socks, hat and gloves!
Town Galena is extremely neat and clean. The town's beauty was enhanced by its night decorations. It feels like a dream to me. I believe this town is also attractive in the morning. Thank you.
Just looking at the decorations already looks very beautiful, I'm sure that when the celebration day arrives it will definitely be very lively.

Are the holidays still on going over there? I love the fact the xmas was quite but hope it wasnt so cold through out the day?
No. Our Christmas was on December 25, I just didn't get around to sharing these photos until now!

What a pretty place! Those early morning pictures are great, before most people are even out of bed. What a nice quaint town!
It is a charming little town! It was the site of one of the Lincoln/ Douglas debates that helped Lincoln win the election.
