An early morning trip downtown provided an opportunity for a few snowy photos, before eventually visiting the warmth of the Art Institute. More about that later!

Skating is free at McCormick Tribune Ice Rink, located in Millennium Park, though you are required to make an online reservation. If you don't have your own skates, rentals are available for a fee. It’s a major winter destination in Chicago, near Michigan Avenue shopping. In the summer months, this 16,000 square foot space is converted into the Park Grill Plaza, a popular outdoor dining area.

Just up the stairs from the skating rink is the
"Bean" (Cloud Gate) sculpture.

The official name, Cloud Gate, comes from the fact that 80% of its surface reflects the sky, and its 12-foot-high arch creates a "gate" that visitors can walk through to reach the park. Although with the morning's fresh snow fall the sky reflection is far less than 80%!

It was created by British-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor. It was his first public outdoor work in the United States. Kapoor was inspired by liquid mercury. The sculpture is designed to reflect and distort the surrounding city skyline, the clouds, and the people walking around it.

The sculpture is made of 168 stainless steel plates welded together. The seams were polished to create a completely seamless, mirror-like finish.
It stands 33 feet high, 66 feet long, and 42 feet wide. It is an incredibly heavy structure, weighing approximately 110 tons.

Flamingo, an abstract steel artwork created by Alexander Calder and installed in 1974 is another famous sculpture in Chicago. It is located in the Federal District about 1 mile away from the 'Bean'

You might recognize the Flamingo from its appearance in the 1986 film Ferris Bueller's Day Off during the parade sequence.
It stands 53 feet tall and weighs roughly 50 tons. It is painted in a specific shade of vermilion now known as "Calder Red." and this intense color contrasts with the dark, monochromatic office buildings.

When I was growing up my town had an indoor skating rink which was great fun in the summer, but during the winter most of my skating was done on frozen lakes and ponds. One year my parents ran a garden hose and flooded an area right in our yard so that we could skate. Good memories!

Here is more info than you probably want to know!

Making the ice rink at Millennium Park (officially the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink) is a complex engineering feat that allows it to stay frozen even when Chicago’s weather climbs into the 40s or 50s.
Because it sits on top of a parking garage and must transition back into a public plaza (Park Grill) in the summer, the "refrigeration plant" is built directly into the infrastructure.
1. The Hidden Infrastructure
Underneath the visible concrete plaza is a permanent network of specialized pipes. When skating season begins, workers prepare the surface by ensuring it is clean and clear of debris. The system relies on Sub-surface Refrigeration, which means the cooling elements are tucked just beneath the surface you walk on in the summer.
2. The Cooling Agent (Glycol)
The "magic" ingredient isn't actually water; it's propylene glycol (a non-toxic antifreeze).
The Chiller: A massive industrial refrigeration unit (a "chiller") is turned on.
Circulation: This chiller cools the glycol to roughly 15°F to 20°F (-9°C to -6°C).
The Loop: The chilled glycol is pumped through the miles of tubing under the plaza, effectively turning the entire concrete floor into a massive "freezer tray."
3. Layering the Ice
Once the ground is cold enough that water won't melt on contact, the "making" of the ice begins:
The Base Layer: Crews use a fine-mist sprayer to apply thin layers of water. If they poured a bucket of water all at once, it wouldn't freeze evenly and would crack.
Painting: Once a thin base of ice is established, they often "paint" the ice. They use a white water-based paint to give the rink its crisp look (which also helps reflect sunlight to keep it from melting) and then paint the logos or lines.
The Build-up: More layers of water are sprayed on top of the paint until the ice is roughly 1.5 to 2 inches thick.
4. Maintenance (The Zamboni)
Because the rink is outdoors, it deals with "urban dust," wind, and sunlight. A Zamboni (or similar resurfacer) scrapes off the top layer of "snow" (chewed-up ice) and lays down a thin sheet of hot water. Hot water is used because it melts the top layer of the existing ice slightly, allowing the new water to fuse perfectly for a smoother, glass-like finish
