Chicago's Holiday Train

Beginning in November the CTA (Chicago Transit Authourity) Holiday train runs through Christmas. Begun 33 years ago, in 1992 the 'L' train brings seasonal joy to all the city's rail lines with its bright lights and seasonal decorations.

There is a schedule available to find which line the holiday train is running on. This last week before Christmas it is on the red line.

The train provides a festive photo opportunity!

Santa Claus rides on an open-air flatcar and waves to the passengers coming aboard at each station.

The hand poles become candy cane's and volunteers ride along handing out peppermint candies to passengers and commuters on their way to work.

CTA employees donate their time and raise money to purchase groceries. They will donate approximately 400 food baskets to local community organizations who will pass out the food baskets and bring a little holiday joy to a lot of people. Each basket contains all the ingredients for a holiday meal, including a canned ham, potatoes, mixed vegetables, muffin mix, macaroni and cheese, fruit cocktail, green beans, corn and dessert.

There's no extra charge for riding the holiday train, normal fares apply.

Now that's a fun 33 year old Christmas tradition of the CTA.

In Vancouver we have an annual Christmas miniature train ride through a winter wonderland in Stanley park but this year it's had mechanical and safety issues and has ceased.

Wow is just so little…
Woooooooowwww is better.
It’s just incredible how a celebration can be so transformed into such a beautiful thing.

This train is a fantastic idea. It is beautiful outside, but also inside the Christmas air is everywhere. Now I am thinking about the children. They are always excited to get on the train, I imagine that getting on a train like this they feel a double emotion !DIY

Very cool train and it's great the employees raise money to donate food baskets to those in need 😃 I seen on the news recently there was one that passed through somewhere in Iowa. Too far away from me though, I think that one originated in Canada.

Canadian Pacific holiday train is amazing. It came through Wisconsin the early part of December. I have driven to see it in the past and believe me, it is worth the effort. It's a memorable experience.

That is the one. Hmm do you know if it takes the same route every year? I would have to drive about 4 hours if it takes the same route. It also looks like it passed through no scheduled stop

I'm not sure about routes and stops. It appears there have been changes since the last time I saw it. Just over an hour away for me.

The CTA Holiday Train sounds like such a delightful tradition.
It's amazing how it spreads holiday cheer across the city with its decorations, Santa's apparences, and the thoughbd268tful gestures like handing out peppermint candies.
