Trump’s Tariffs Backfire

Trump’s Tariffs Backfire

President Donald Trump's aggressive tariff strategy against China has not only backfired but also inadvertently accelerated a global shift in consumer behaviour and may just help reduce the cost of living crisis. As Chinese manufacturers pivot to direct to consumer (DTC) models, they are exposing the hefty profit margins of luxury brands and reshaping the global retail sector.

The biggest thing I have picked up is the lie that wages are too high in western nations that manufacturing HAS to be offshored. But it is beginning to be clear that this is not the case. The core reason behind it is, of course increased profits.

Some of the profit margins have been diabolically large and it is showing that we can produce things locally and still turn a profit. The latest campaigns out of China will definitely or more so hopefully bring about change. There is also a lot of irony in the MAGA movement being exposed.

A Capitalist Will Sell You The Rope To Hang Yourself

It's a common phrase but one we scoff at, but China is showcasing the movements having their items procured and printed in China to be on sold to unsuspecting American's wanting to do the right thing. They can't escape it, it appears and now China is hitting up social media to expose what these people are doing.

In an attempt to bolster American manufacturing, Trump imposed steep tariffs on Chinese imports with rates reaching as high as 145%. However, these measures have led to unintended consequences. American manufacturers, reliant on Chinese machinery and components have faced increased costs and supply chain disruptions. The tariffs have strained global trade relations and contributed to market instability.

Trump Signals Tariff Roll Back

Facing mounting economic pressure and criticism from various sectors Trump has showed signs of a potential rollback of these tariffs. Reports suggest that the administration is considering reducing tariffs on Chinese goods by more than half. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged that the current trade dynamics are "unsustainable" and emphasized the need for de escalation.

This shift has unveiled the substantial markups imposed by luxury brands. For instance, a handbag produced in China for USD 50 might retail for over USD 1,000 under a designer label. By selling directly, Chinese manufacturers can offer similar products without the label at a fraction of the cost, challenging the traditional luxury market.

The rise of ecommerce platforms and social media has further facilitated this DTC approach. Consumers worldwide are now more informed and price sensitive, leading to increased demand for affordable luxury alternatives.

More Chinese Ads on Google

Previously China didn't promote their manufacturing on major sights and recently we are starting to see them do this, for instance an esurfboard retailing between AUD 8,000 - 12,000 can be bought from China for AUD 1,500.

As this Tariff war continues, consumers will be shown how much they are being scalped and this will either lead to more direct to customer sales or, major brands having to reduce profit margins.

Perhaps, Trump is the president the world didn't want but the world needed to showcase how much we are being ripped off. He's not America's best and finest, but in he's arrogance and I don't know what to call it, Blunders? perhaps he is showing how much we're all being ripped off.

Eitherway, it has been entertaining to watch so long as no one presses the red buttons.

De-escalation is the best option. Still, it's good the trade wars is exposing the rip-offs of the big companies. The effects that this war will have, good or bad, will be so colossal that it will roll through generations yet to come.

Remember how we made fun of the shitlibs and woke left about "food comes from stores"?

We are witnessing the right-wing version of it in trade.

The world has been ripped off for decades. You are all trading actual goods for paper that we call money today.
