A CHOICE - YOUR GROWTH OR YOUR COMFORT?

The rowdy noise of their chattering went on and on, my ears were filled with their noises as it was in the room. I rolled from one side of my bunk bed to another, changing my sleeping position intermittently. "I thought we all had a long day and they should be trying hard as I am, to catch some sleep so as not to be cranky the next day. Everyone can't be like you, everyone is not you" I reminisced.
Apparently, that was the second night of being there, the first night wasn't a blissful one but it was rather a slaughtering one. I slept outside with fellow prospective corp members (PCM), who also arrived at the dead of the day to the camp, we couldn't do our registration by that time so by default, we had to sleep outside, where we got preyed and feasted on by mosquitoes - it was a long short night for us all.

Pexel

There were hundred of thousands of PCM in my hostel, no exaggerations! They aren't my siblings that I can shun, back at home nor caution to maintain a close lips whenever I wanted to sleep. I knew I kissed my comfort farewell when I decided to come to the orientation camp but I never knew it would be this bad not even sleep - I fancy good sleep.
"My bunk mates were already deep in sleep, I guess I am the only one that can't sleep in a noisy place, "what should I do"? I thought. There's one thing I usually resort to, in situations like this, although I do not like it because it makes my ears itchy and heavy but right there, that day, I had no better choice than to do it still.
I plugged my airpod to my ears, connected my phone to it, tune in a cool music and swiped up the volume to the max. This is haven! this is heavenly.....
The noises faded away and I soon fell asleep until the pingle rang- declaring morning devotional service for all campers.I hadn't adjusted to the modalities of the camp neither my bunk mates, obviously, they were still in wonderland in their dreams. I quickly went round waking them up, by then, soldiers were already inside our hostel, enforcing us to move out. We did not took our baths nor clean up because there was no time for that anymore,"who cares"?Nobody really does- every man for himself.

My intolerance to noise while sleeping persisted for weeks and I did what I had to do over and over again for a week and few days until my body naturally adapted to the noise and I had no need of music to induce me to sleep.

The Lessons Learnt.

  • There are things I never knew I could change about me until I was willing to change it.
  • My comfort zone gave me the peace and serenity I wanted but it can't give me the growth which is earned through pain and self denial.

Adaptability is a solid skill that helps no matter where you find yourself. Comfort zones can only last so long. We do want to grow as individuals.

Yeah!
So why choose momentary comfort over lasting growth?
