I had the Scare of my Life

Who would have thought that what we thought to be a simple fever would end up with being hospitalized? It was a Sunday when my husband, Jay, felt unwell. He was experiencing body aches and fever. We thought he just needed some rest, so we went home directly after church.

In the next days, his fever was on and off. He took a sick leave and rested at home. We tried to self-medicate until Wednesday morning, and we got the scare of our lives! Early morning, after peeing, he called me and told me he was losing his strength, and when I reached him, he collapsed and went unconscious for several seconds! Good thing I was able to hold him before he went blank.

I dragged him to our children's mattress in our living room. (Our children were sleeping in our living room at that time and were awakened by the commotion.) Our children saw their daddy unconscious with eyes wide open staring at the blank. One of the girls was crying. Calling her daddy. We were massaging his hands, then after several seconds, he regained consciousness. Thank God!!

I called for help. I am grateful for church friends who immediately responded to my call and drove us to the nearby hospital. We went to the Emergency Room, and Jay was admitted for proper medical care. Laboratory tests were conducted. On the next day, his doctor told us he had Dengue Fever. It was a relief. Dengue is curable compared to other illnesses when treated early. The reason for his fainting episode was dehydration.

He stayed in the hospital for four days until it was safe for him to go home. Those 4 days were a challenge for me. I have children to attend to who are going to school. And a husband in the hospital. Good thing the hospital is just 2 kilometers away. I went back and forth to the house, hospital, and school.

Watching inspirational talks while in the hospital.

Discharge Clearance. Clear to go home.

We are grateful for Health insurance. We only paid less than 500 pesos. The rest was covered by our Health insurance and Philhealth.

I am grateful to all who helped us in these times of trial. Friends, churchmates, and our neighbors were ready to lend us a helping hand. I am thankful for all the prayers. I was never alone dealing with such a situation.

As I look back at the moment of watching my husband unconscious, I think, what would our life be without him? It was scary! My heart is full of gratitude that he recovered after having Dengue Fever for the second time around. He had it for the first time 12 years ago.

Today is his birthday! I am thankful for another year of life for him!

This experience of ours has taught me a lot of things. First, health really is wealth. This is always my prayer that God will grant us good health. Second, life is short, so we have to make the most out of our time here. Let's be kind. Spend our energies in making good deeds. Third, in times of health emergencies, it is very important to have Health insurance and emergency funds. Fourth, when you do good to others, it will also come back to you.

Thank you for hearing me out. I pray that whatever you are doing right now, you are safe and happy!

Until next time!

xoxo,

Met
