Technology and Development

Sometimes, urban development is something that might not be foreseen. This is the case in Lagos, Nigeria. The Lagos planners didn't foresee the future growth of Lagos. Anyone who knows Lagos would understand how congested the city is with traffic. Some of the effects of insufficient infrastructure have led to constant flooding during the rainy season.

Lagos is one of the cities struggling to keep pace with accommodating individuals. On a daily basis, the population keeps growing. With the overpopulation, it is a city that is car-centered, as the majority of the occupants are car owners. It's a city that focuses on roads, not minding the pedestrian spaces. Lagos is one city where drivers struggle on the pedestrian path. There are so many areas where walking is limited, and sidewalk verges are dangerous to pedestrians.

Being car-centered makes traffic congestion a daily routine, leading to pollution and other environmental hazards. Due to the population, with technology in so many urban areas, different technologies have been used in an effort to provide solutions to traffic issues.

For Lagos, there is a need for more drainage systems to combat natural disasters like floods. Lagos is a city that needs a more sustainable planning approach to become a comfortable city for everyone living in it.

While the current city I am in is balanced, it is in terms of walkability and being car-centered. While the infrastructure prioritizes roads, pedestrian lanes were also created. There were areas which were made especially for pedestrians. This is a way of encouraging mixed road use and not placing restrictions. With this, there is a sense of community and interaction among the residents.

Although there is still a lot that needs to be done when it comes to technological development in different cities in my country, proactive planning on future development is important to prevent the negative effects of past improper planning that are currently causing issues.
