Should History Be Neglected?

When it comes to history as a subject, many schools don't find it as a subject that shouldn't be mandatory . While math, English, and other science subjects are treated more importantly. History is seen as past events, and there should be nothing special about it, but personal is far more than that.

History is not just about the past. It helps to build the future and form an identity. With history, mistakes won't be repeated. When we speak of identity, it is history that would give us a clear understanding of our roots. I learned history in school, and I must say, it is not just about dates and names.

Imagine there is no history; the details of what happened during the World War and Nigerian military coup would have been unknown to me. I know some will say we can always read it up with our phone and get the idea of what happened, but I must say that there are lots of past historical events I don't know about, due to my seeing them as less vital and that's how the majority who didn't learn History as a subject in school do too. School is a learning environment where one learns a lot without choice.

Imagine the historical event that led to the stop of killing twins. Without the lessons of history, we will just enjoy lots of things without knowing what these heroes passed through for us to enjoy it.

When the young generation is not taught history in school, when they come across or hear of these things elsewhere, it becomes like a fairy tale to them. At a young age, children believe in everything they are being told by their teacher. Encouraging history is necessary in our educational sectors, as this will leave the upcoming generation informed about the country before their existence.

History is not all about dates and names; it has an impact on shaping the future. History has a way of repeating itself when we don't learn from what happened in the past. Those who know the historical event that happened before 1960, it's our awareness of this history that has shared our present leaders not to fall back into what our ancestors conquered.

Different wars occurred in the past, and studying history as a course would help the young Nigerians understand the essence of communal living, tolerance for people's beliefs, and oneness. All these were what people in the past were ignorant of, and making the younger generation understand these would make the future a better one.

Many will emphasize that history is nothing but knowing names of past people. But history does not only remind us of the past heroes names and dates; it reminds us of what happened, what caused it, and how it ended. It is necessary for history to be taken as a core subject in schools.
