Arising Above the Storm |- The Ink Well Fiction Prompt 127

In the heart of the town is a beautiful house, tiled with the most expensive tiles and marble floors. The exterior is decorated with flowers, giving the house recognition as the most expensive and finest house in the area. In this house lives a family of three: a dad, a mom, and their daughter named Karli.

From the exterior, this family appears peaceful and happy, but within, a storm rages. While outsiders know Karli's parents to be kind and generous, they don't know their bitter and harsh side. Little Miss Karli suffers as her parents' words pierce her soul like daggers.

One Sunday evening, as they sit around the dining table for supper, Karli's parents begin their everyday signature of raining hurtful words on her.

"You mean, after all the money I contributed to make that church program a success, you didn't even participate in any of the presentations? I have always asked myself, 'Why are you the seed I have borne?" Her mum laments.

"I watched with anticipation to see you come out and do the wonders other kids were doing, but nothing. All I asked for was just one child, a male child, but getting you as a girl is of no use to me." Her dad adds.

Karli's heart breaks; she loses her appetite as she struggles with her spoon and fights back tears from rolling out. Unable to control her tears, she excuses herself from the dinning table and leaves for her room, feeling inferior and unloved by her parents. She sleeps off in bed with tears in her eyes.

On Monday morning, she wakes up, prepares and gets dressed for school. While waiting for the driver to get the car ready, she stands by her window, gazing at the beautiful nature and how God has made all things bright and beautiful. She feels different, and something shifts within her.

With newfound courage and determination, she speaks firmly to herself.

"No one has the right to define me; I define myself. I won't let my parents ever again make me feel inferior or make me cry. I am as bright as this day, I am not worthless; I am an asset not a liability, and I will prove it to the world."

She leaves the house with the driver, feeling better. From that day on, Karli becomes a different soul, seeking knowledge endlessly, and whenever her parents make her feel little, she finds comfort in nature by sitting in her armchair and spending hours by her window, gracing the beauty of the world.

Day by day, she challenges herself, growing her self-confidence, studying hard, and joining different clubs in school, which helps her self-confidence grow. Even with all this growth, the conflict within her family continues. Her parents refuse to see the changes taking place; rather, they keep dwelling on her flaws.

Regardless of all this, Karli refuses to let their bitterness and harsh words quench her zeal to discover her true self. Her encouragement and support come from the clubs she join in school, her classmates, and her teachers, who see her potential and believe in her.

One day, as she stands by her window, she is grateful for that Monday morning when the brightness of the sky helped her shake off timidity, hurtful words, and low self-esteem. The beauty of nature gives her strength to find her true self.

As the sun rises from the East, she smiles to it and embraces her worth, grateful to all those who believe in her and help her in her journey of self-discovery and confidence. With this incredible personal growth, she is ready to stand up and face the world, knowing she is not worthless but a nation-builder and a star. Believing that her height will make her parents find every reason to believe in her one day.

This is a very nice story, @marynn. It provides a window into the world of a person who has been repeatedly put down by her family and must find her own way and believe in herself.

We encourage you to find opportunities to expand upon narrative that summarizes what is happening in the story by using dialogue and action instead. Long sections of narrative are not as engaging to the reader. You can read more in the following articles:

Hi @marynn, I really enjoyed reading your story of how Linda rose above the storm of her abusive marriage and found her true self. You portrayed her emotions and struggles very well and I felt her pain and courage as I read. I liked how you used the storm as a metaphor for her situation and how she finally saw the rainbow as a sign of hope and freedom. Your story is inspiring and empowering and I’m glad you shared it with us. Keep writing!😊
