The Truth About Addiction.

Addiction, what a tricky one. Addiction happens to be something that I've seen almost everywhere and I'm most individuals, I've seen it in friends, families, neighbors, colleagues and even in me, myself and I. And it ranges from the small things that we really do not count to the big things that can't really be ignored. Most people often see the big ones and ask you why don't you just stop, why don't you just quit. But it's not that easy, and that's where you find out that it goes beyond being about choice, it is a disease that messes with one's life.

And my reason is this, if we say addiction is a choice, then it's not addiction at first, if it is a choice then it's something we can switch from or stop doing. Take smoking, drinking, pressing of phone and the likes for example, if it's a choice, then it should have been easy to stop. When a person tells you, "I will stop smoking." Just know you will find the person doing it again tomorrow, or the following week. It sounds simple/easy until you get to meet those who have tried to stop. We call it addiction, it's something your brain fights, you crave, you want, you relapse. And every time you want to stop, it feels your willpower is not strong enough to.

Now, the fact that I said it is a disease doesn't mean it is an excuse. I'm saying it is serious and real than we think. This is something that messes with the brain and needs treatment. When you see your addiction as this and accept it, it will help you understand it more and change, first off you will stop blaming yourself for it, it's there already, solution is the next step, you look for help, go for counselling, get medical attention if need be. Mind you, it won't just stop, cause it didn't just come, everything is a process and with time you will do better.

Before I conclude I will like to add that choice has it's role to play too, yeah. That is the choice to get help, the choice to speak out and seek for real help, the choice to resist temptation, the choice to show up, the choice towork on it. Those are real and somehow hard choices to make.

And when we notice these things in people, we shouldn't just make them a topic or gossip about them, we should ask ourselves, "what have I done to help, how can I be of help." That's the question we need to ask ourselves, and when we finally decide to also, we should know the way to approach such a person and ask them, "how can I help/support you." When the likes of compassion, understanding and action is combined together it makes stopping/quiting possible and easier. Every human is struggling and deserving of help.
