Love In Action: A life Of Purpose, Charity And Service.
I was still very young when I first start involving myself in community projects, I just wanted to do good, I wanted to help, to make a difference and to at least make some impact. Back then, I didn't even realize those things would reshape me.
Then, I thought I was doing it for others, but I was the one being transformed, I wasn't doing it for eye service sake or for people to commend me, I just had good intentions at heart. And the truth I have realized is, its not until you have much, its not about how much you give, but the heart you use in doing the little you were able to and the impact you are making.
While growing up, I have seen a lot, most especially where I grew up form, we were raised to see people, neighbors and all help one another, everyone is like family, even if it's not much, we give what we can, there are time's bwe share the last grain if rice with our neighbors, there are time's our neighbor divide their last tuber of yam into two, just so to share with us.
That's where I grew up from, we see helping, caring, sharing, volunteering and all as a normal thing, we lend a helping hand to those in need, my parents especially, what I know they do most is accomodating people they don't even know, am serious, my parents had accommodated different people for years, not minding their tribe, religion or whatever, they are just being themselves, being human.
Even though the world today is not encouraging things like this anymore, people at the end of the day often shown to have been acting up so as to harm you in the end, still, we won't stop helping, we won't stop showing up, just that we have been more careful, we do certain research, we inform certain people of some helps that we do, especially if its to an outsider, we have our reason's, a lot has been seen and heard.
I have learnt a lot form serving, form helping, from volunteering, its not just the fact that we feel good that we are able to at least show up, but about the relief, the smiles and all you are able to bring to people. There was a time we went to distribute food for a certain community, a lot has been happening in that community, the government hasn't done much, they promised to but haven't shown up, we did some meetings, gathered what we could and went there, when we arrived with the supplies, the people were just so happy, they appreciated the little we were able to give, it wasn't just about the supplies, it was about the hope we gave them and the dignity we restored.
Service goes beyond giving out material things, this write up is also aiming at letting you know you don't need to have much, you don't really need to give out material things, you van choose to volunteer anyway, you can give your time, your energy and all, you can even sit out with someone and listen to their story, or even offer words of encouragement.
We all have our struggles, the fact that we do does not mean we are comfortable too, we have our struggles and responsibilities too, there are times I feel down and exhausted, there are times that I ffeel overwhelmed by my own challenges, and yet, I knew that people and the community I was serving needed me, that's what makes me keep going atimes, some people look up to me, why should I fail them, why should I give up, we are all facing one thing or the other, might be small, simple ,big or complex, but still, we all deserve a helping hand.
Also, when you take your time to serve, you learn, you gain more understanding about the people and the would you live in you see people's struggles, you are able to share your story and encourage others, you become more compassionate, patient and want to make a difference.
I believe acts of service is one of the few ways we can bridge the gaps between us. Whatever way it is, supporting, offering, helping, listening, giving, caring and all. All these at the end are what reminds us that despite our differences, we are all humans and humanity comes first.
I wish to have more so I can do more, it's not always easy, there are days I don't want to go out to help because I know I didn't contribute to what we are going to share, but still, I summon courage to go, I smile at people and all, there time's am going through stuffs too, yet I act ad if all is fine, because atimes when I remember the faces and testimonies of those we've helped, it gives me joy, it makes me want to continue.
And because things like this helps make our world a better place, I will keep it up, so help me God.
All pictures are mine.
