A System In Crisis: My Hospital Experience.
Hospitals I believe are supposed to be where healing and proper/supervised care takes place, am not saying it's not so, but if you've ever lived in Nigeria or had one time been admitted for months in a government owned hospital you would very well understand me and even pray not to ever get sick to the extent of being admitted.
The health sector is bad, any time you hear something like..we will have to admit you, it do sound more like a death sentence, I would be writing from my experience, it is what I have not just seen but had to go through/endure. Just hearing the name hospital or perceiving a kind of smell do make me remember the pain I went through. I would be very brief, so please, do well to...
My sickness happens to take longer than expected, and I had to undergo diverse surgeries, one out of it was being scheduled, rescheduled and then rescheduled again, imagine what the reason was, there was no electricity, and there's no fuel as well, imagine how a government hospital wouldn't have constant electricity, when the light finally came, do you even expect me to consent to being operated on...cause what if the light goes off during surgery.
This particular incident took the life of a patient about three beds away from mine, his operations were being rescheduled as well, and so I guess he couldn't hold on anymore... Also there was a time I had to be on oxygen as I couldn't breathe, I was barely conscious as at that time, can you imagine in my ward of about 28-30 beds there was only one oxygen, and as at that time about 5 of us needed it, the moment it seemed one was getting stable, they’d remove the oxygen mask and carry it to the next bed....How do you explain that, need I tell you that one of us also lost his life due to that.
And then again water, I was scheduled for another operation and they wanted to reschedule it again because they said there's no water, what...in a hospital, no water, we were about two waiting to be wheeled into the theater that day, the other man and my dad volunteered to go buy water. This is an operation wr paid for..we paid for every single thing and we were still the one to go get water?
I have seen a lot, I’ve slept on metal stretchers when wards become overcrowded, I’ve seen patients being on the walkway because there was no space inside, I’ve seen a child die because the only doctor around was already handling five emergencies. I’ve seen nurses and doctors rush out to cry because they can't bear to do that in front of the patient.
During my stay there, I had they had been owing the doctors for months and they wanted to go ona strike, well they did went on a strike, they went some days after I had another surgery, my wounds were still fresh, the area still had the stitched stuff in, most of us were being discharged, I was given my medications, methylated spirit and some other stuffs to be used in dressing the wound on my own at home, we went home praying I wouldn’t develop complications.
Some will say it's a wicked thing for doctors to go on strike, that they shouldn't abandon lives, but what do we say about the already failed system, these doctors save lives daily with little or nothing, the pay is low, they are being owed for months, the working condition is unbearable, who knows, their absence may cause the government to look their side smd notice them.
Aside that I am advocating for help, I am akso demanding for a reform and a system that prioritize life. If a strike is what would shake it, then maybe it's the best thing to embark on, also, I know this might/will come at the expense of people's lives/health....but a reform is needed.

I see how the lack of basic infrastructure and working conditions transforms what should be a healing space into an environment that worsens the vulnerability of patients.

Thanks.
We really need a reform in the healthcare sector or this country and strike isn't really good for the patient, so hopefully the government will do something pretty soon to turn the tides around.
