An almost extinct industry; Pottery

Various items made of clay are part of pottery. In ancient times, Hindus used clay to make idols of various gods and goddesses, but nowadays people of other religions also use pottery.

One of the oldest industries of the subcontinent is now on the verge of extinction as the demand for earthenware, which carries the tradition of thousands of years of Bengali life, is dwindling. Kumara said that various problems including the rush of modern goods, lack of government patronage and increase in the price of soil have led to the loss of this industry. Pottery is a century-old tradition of Bengalis.

Pottery had its roots in the subcontinent and Bangladesh was no exception. Although Bangladesh is a predominantly Muslim country, pottery is predominantly a Hindu craft. Symmetrical, smooth, bright and will last a long time if not read. These features made pottery very popular.

There are several steps to make pottery. First, soil and water are mixed well so that there are no lumps in between. First, chakki is used to shape the soft clay into different shapes.

After being given the required shape, it is dried in the sun and then burnt in the heat of fire.

Sometimes when drying in the sun or burning in fire some parts crack and some things break. If it is repairable then it is fixed with soft clay and again dried and burnt. If not fixable then it is rejected so that clay products are not worked on in the next step.

Many types of toys for children are also made from clay, painted with colors that attract children.

Earlier in every village there were potters who used to make various things with clay, but nowadays people use clay pots, so there is not much demand. As a result Kumar Para is disappearing. Many have switched careers to livelihood.
Earlier, only clay idols were given priority, but now, starting from clay dishes and home decorations, the importance of various items is increasing at a much higher rate.
Currently in the midst of various technologies hopefully beside other industry this industry will be saved from extinction.

Did you know that pottery is a valuable archaeological artifact that provides insight into the history of human society? Let me know, I am leaving here as of today. See you soon. Take care dear Hivers.
