She was told that all the rooms were full, when in fact she had rented four—one for herself and the others for her team. Looking around, she realized that everyone else there was white. Baker made statements to the press, but not all media outlets published them, undoubtedly a common practice at that time.

En este libro se describe un recorrido exhaustivo por la historia real del hotel, desde su inauguración en 1930 hasta la época contemporánea.

Luis Báez nació en La Habana en el año 1936. Por su probado e incisivo desempeño mereció el Premio Nacional de Periodismo y en sus últimos años de vida trabajó junto a Pedro de la Hoz en varios proyectos editoriales. Falleció en el año 2015.

Pedro de la Hoz nació en Cienfuegos en el año 1953. Periodista, reportero y crítico de arte. Trabaja en el diario Granma. Ha sido laureado con grandes premios como el Premio Nacional de Periodismo Cultural.

Antonio Martínez nació en La Habana en 1944. Licenciado en derecho y máster en Gestión del turismo. Desde 1977 ocupa la dirección general del Hotel Nacional de Cuba.

El mismo ha sido visitado por personalidades célebres, viajeros curiosos e incluso peregrinos del trópico . Esta fastuosa instalación se encuentra erigida sobre una de las elevaciones más prominentes del litoral habanero. Sus habitaciones , terrazas, salones, jardines, restaurantes han sido testigos de grandes y significativos acontecimientos históricos de la vida social, política y cultural cubana. Registros de tales sucesos y visitas aparecen en las páginas de este libro que pretende ser una viva colección de crónicas y estampas que revelan los vínculos de la emblemática institución turística con el pulso de cada época.

Las galerías y espacios exteriores son utilizados frecuentemente como escenarios para el registro de testimonios y la filmación de numerosos documentales.

Sabían que antes del triunfo de la Revolución Cubana, mientras operaron compañías norteamericanas, no todos los huéspedes eran admitidos en el Hotel, ni aún siendo famosos, las personas de color negro podrían gozar de estás instalaciones. Se comenta en el libro que uno de los escándalos más notorios tuvo como centro a Josephine Baker una gran vedette que vino a la isla a presentar su espectáculo, le dijeron que todas las habitaciones estaban llenas, cuando precisamente ella había alquilado cuatro , una para ella y las demás para su equipo, al mirar ella a su alrededor se da cuenta que todas las personas allí presentes eran blancas. La Baker hizo declaraciones a la prensa , pero no todos los medios la publicaron, con seguridad desmanes de aquella época.
