They Say Dress for the Job You Want, Not the Job You Have

Just the other day, my employer reminded me about that timeless advice: “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” It sounded funny to me and I decided to tease it by showing up at work dressed like Batman. Yes! Batman.

This made my boss laugh hard. Is there any truth to this age-old saying?

I know what they really mean by that. It is all about showing your future career aspirations and not just where you are right now. But does this imply that I should exchange my normal office clothes with a superhero costume? Most likely, no.

Wearing what you want to be wearing is indicative of your being ambitious. It says, “Hey, I see myself in a higher role and I am prepared.” This shows your manager that you are committed towards career development.

Besides, it may also make you feel more self-assured. You can testify how great it feels like when you put on the clothes that make you feel really good about yourself? That also adds to your confidence making you stand taller and smile more brightly. Dressing for the job you want can recreate this feeling every day resulting in a positive self image and increased performance at work.

However, it is important to be true to oneself still. In case suits and ties aren’t your thing then don’t force yourself into them. Identify clothing that matches with who you are and energizes your confidence.

Another thing, to tell the truth, you do not have to put on a superhero costume to dress for success. That was funny for a moment but it is still possible to dress up for your dream job without going too far. When deciding how to dress for promotion at work, consider dressing slightly above your current position which displays your commitment towards the career besides maintaining professionalism.

In addition, it’s not all about clothes. Dressing for the job that you want also involves attitude and behavior. Proactivity, embracing challenges and commitment to role can show preparedness for a promotion even when dressed casually.

To sum up, dressing for the job one wants matters but so does authenticity. And come on, if being dressed as Batman makes his boss smile once in a while what’s wrong with that? But remember next time not to carry it along with you.
