It might appear insignificant to be polite but it holds a lot of weight when it comes to how we relate with people. In my opinion, politeness can bring a huge change in our lives personally and professionally.

Being Polite is showing respect for others. It’s like saying “Hey, I can see you and I appreciate you.” This small gesture can go a long way in building good relationships. Be it please and thank you or opening the door for someone; these minor acts signify that we care about those around us.

Politeness also aids in creating a positive atmosphere. Consider this – somebody being impolite or not showing respect definitely does not help to improve the situation at all. On the other hand, if people are well-mannered as well as considerate towards others; they will be able to create an atmosphere that is welcoming and friendly where individuals will feel safe and important.

In addition to giving others warm feelings, politeness could be beneficial for us as well. When we are polite, other people are more likely to help and work with us. People tend to be attracted to those who treat them with kindness and respect; thus by being polite we can create strong social bonds and support systems.

But it’s not always easy to be polite especially when things get tough. We may feel like shouting at someone when we’re overwhelmed or angry but a polite response can change everything. By maintaining our calmness and treating others kindly, we can avoid escalating conflicts and keeping good rapport.

One interesting thing I’ve learnt was that there is something called strategic politeness in all these politeness theories. This implies that politeness is used as a way of attaining objectives whether it is making someone do something for you or avoiding an argument. Although this may seem a bit sneaky, it is actually just part of how humans interact naturally.

By way of example, contemplate on how often we use courteous words in our solicitations. Instead of asking directly, we might say, "Do you mind helping me with this?" This way is more likely to encourage a constructive response because it displays consideration for the other person’s time and skill.

However significant though is that politeness must be sincere and not just as a manipulation tool. It can be felt by people when someone lacks sincerity which may ruin trust between them. Hence strategic politesse may work; however it has to go along with authenticity.

I am convinced that being polite provides us with an influential weapon to reinforce our relationships and improve our lives too. It’s more than following societal expectations; it’s about displaying compassion towards others. Therefore, striving to always speak respectfully can help generate an environment where positive relationships thrive among ourselves as well as our colleagues.
