Palm Sunday

Yesterday the Christian world celebrated Palm Sunday, a date that commemorates the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, whose population received him as a king as they acclaimed him waving palm branches as he passed by; the same crowd that a few days later would repudiate him by calling for his crucifixion.

This date marks the beginning of Holy Week, the season of the year that remembers the last days of Jesus' earthly life before he was captured and crucified by the Roman authorities of the time, resurrecting on the third day according to tradition and our beliefs.

Yesterday morning, I went to the church I usually attend every Sunday, and on this occasion, it began in a small park located a short distance away, where the priest blessed the palms and olive branches that the parishioners had brought, after the church collaborators had distributed them.

Ayer el mundo cristiano celebró el Domingo de Ramos, una fecha que conmemora la entrada de Jesús en Jerusalén, cuya población lo recibió como un rey mientras lo aclamaban agitando ramos de palma a su paso, la misma multitud que unos días después lo repudiaría pidiendo su crucifixión.

Esta fecha marca el inicio de la Semana Santa, la temporada del año que recuerda los últimos días de la vida terrenal de Jesús antes de ser apresado y crucificado por las autoridades romanas de la época, resucitando al tercer día de acuerdo a la tradición y a nuestras creencias.

Ayer en la mañana, acudí a la iglesia a la cual suelo asistir todos los domingos, y en esta ocasión, la misma se inició en un pequeño parque ubicado a corta distancia, donde el sacerdote bendijo las palmas y ramas de olivo que los feligreses habíamos llevado, luego de que los colaboradores de la iglesia los repartieran.

This activity lasted about 15 to 20 minutes, and a little more than 100 people attended with our branches or palms in our hands, while the parish priest sprinkled holy water on all of us who were there, and then returned to the church to continue with the mass in the usual way.

The palms or branches of other shrubs used in this ceremony are usually kept in the house all year long, and many of them are then incinerated into ashes to be used on Ash Wednesday, the date that marks the beginning of Lent, which ends next Easter Sunday.

In many countries, Holy Week is usually celebrated with various processions and manifestations of faith typical of these dates, particularly within Catholicism, although other churches or Christian denominations also have their own traditions or rituals.

In Venezuela, this week is usually a holiday or vacation, so it is very common for many people to travel to the beach or to other tourist destinations inside or outside the country, before returning to their normal activities next Monday.

A esta actividad que tuvo una duración de unos 15 o 20 minutos, acudimos poco más de unas 100 personas con nuestras ramas o palmas en las manos, mientras el párroco esparcía agua bendita sobre todos aquellos que nos encontrábamos allí, y luego regresar a la iglesia para continuar con la misa de la forma usual.

Las palmas o ramas de otros arbustos usados en esta ceremonia, suelen guardarse todo el año en la casa, y muchas de ellas luego son incineradas hasta convertirlas en cenizas que serán usadas el Miércoles de Ceniza, la fecha que marca el inicio de la Cuaresma que finaliza el próximo Domingo de Resurrección o Pascua.

En muchos países, la Semana Santa se acostumbra a celebrar con diversas procesiones y manifestaciones de fe propias de estas fechas, particularmente dentro del catolicismo aunque otras iglesias o denominaciones cristianas también tienen sus propias tradiciones o rituales.

En Venezuela, esta semana suele ser festiva o de asueto, por lo que es muy común que muchas personas viajen a la playa o a otros destinos turísticos dentro o fuera del país, antes de reincorporarse nuevamente a sus labores habituales el próximo lunes.
