Yes, I was young in the 70s and it was just like you describe in your story! We had our lives ahead of us and now look! Where are we now? Back then we had no idea of everything that is happening now, war and hellish misery, plus UFOs running around and blowing trumpets.

What an era it must've been. A lot of cultural changes happened in that time, it seems. It sounds both exciting and precarious. My generation (X) co-opted some of the notions during our counter-cultural moment in the 90s and added a bit of high-tech flare to the mix 👾
