En las niñas se llama el complejo de Electra, aunque he conocido casos en los que las hijas son más apegadas con la adre, pero no es el común.
Particularmente creo que el abandono de alguno de los dos padres es cuestión de la educación que recibieron al respecto, o lo que vivieron en su infancia, aunque por supuesto, no necesariamente se deban copiar los patrones vividos..

I can't fully relate to why people abandon their children, maybe a failing marriage, maybe upbringing, maybe its something else. But then, there is no excuse to abandon a child.

No entiendo del todo por qué la gente abandona a sus hijos; quizá sea un matrimonio fallido, quizá la crianza, quizá sea otra cosa. Pero claro, no hay excusa para abandonar a un hijo.
