Preparándome para la vuelta a clases de mis hijos / Preparing for my children's return to school

Aunque todavía falta un mes y medio para que inicien las clases en Argentina, a mi me gusta ir comprando las cosas que necesitan mis hijos para sus estudios, de manera que el impacto en el presupuesto no sea tan fuerte al momento de que deban ir a la escuela.

Ya este año ambos hijos terminarán una etapa de sus estudios: el pequeño saldrá de primaria y el mayor de la secundaria, así que deseo que lleven todo nuevo, desde las mochilas, pues han venido usando las mismas desde hace muchos años, al igual que sus carpetas, que vienen siendo reusadas por años.

Recuerdo que en mi infancia, el forrar y etiquetar los cuadernos de la escuela era todo un rito. Primeramente mi madre lo hacía con láminas de papel del color que solicitaban las maestras, para luego colocarles un plástico protector, que más adelante sería cambiado por el papel de contacto que no se movía como el otro.

En mi secundaria, yo misma forraba mis cuadernos, inventándome carátulas con tiras cómicas del periódico, fotos de revistas, recortes divertidos o cuanto disparate se me ocurría. Hasta con las mitades de los tickets de entrada al cine llegué a tener un cuaderno! Pero en lugar de recibir regaños, mis profesores admiraban mi creatividad, además del hecho de economizar dinero, pues los demás gastaban de más en papeles dobles, mientras yo con cola plástica debajo y encima del papel tenía mis cuadernos únicos y originales.

Pero como en las escuelas de mis hijos usan carpetas con ganchos, toca de vez en cuando cambiarlas, pues a veces pierden la presión y se salen las hojas en el vaivén de la mochila al caminar.

Además, se hace necesario renovarle el vestuario al pequeño que se ha dedicado a crecer y crecer durante las vacaciones, por lo que para invierno me toca comprarle un poco de todo: medias, pantalones, sweaters y hasta la chaqueta. Con el grande, aunque tiene ropa, igual le compraré una que otra pieza, que nunca están de más.

De los útiles escolares ya llevo algunas resmas de las hojas cuadriculadas y de línea que quedaron del año pasado, pero siempre busco tener una caja para cada uno, pues usualmente me avisan que no tienen hojas en la carpeta en la noche, justo cuando no puedo resolver.

Lápices, colores, bolígrafos, borradores, y demás también van en la lista, esperando su turno para ser comprados y colocados dentro de la nueva mochila que también está esperando ser adquirida. Por eso voy paso a paso, tachando lo que ya tengo y ajustando el presupuesto quincenal para ir apertrechándome con todo lo necesario.

Y ustedes, ¿con cuanta antelación empiezan a comprar lo necesario para la vuelta a clases?

This year, both of my children will be finishing a stage of their studies: the younger one will be leaving primary school and the older one will be leaving secondary school, so I want them to have everything new, from their backpacks, which they have been using for many years, to their folders, which have been reused for years.

I remember that in my childhood, covering and labelling school notebooks was quite a ritual. First, my mother would do it with sheets of paper in the colours requested by the teachers, and then she would put a protective plastic cover on them, which would later be replaced by contact paper that didn't move like the other one.

In secondary school, I covered my notebooks myself, inventing covers with comic strips from the newspaper, photos from magazines, funny clippings or whatever nonsense I could think of. I even had a notebook made from halves of cinema tickets! But instead of being scolded, my teachers admired my creativity, as well as the fact that I was saving money, since the others spent too much on double sheets of paper, while I had my unique and original notebooks with plastic glue under and over the paper.

But since my children's schools use folders with clips, they need to be replaced from time to time, as they sometimes lose their grip and the pages fall out when the satchel is jostled while walking.

In addition, it is necessary to renew the wardrobe of the little one who has been growing and growing during the holidays, so for winter I have to buy him a little bit of everything: socks, trousers, sweaters and even a jacket. With the older one, although he has clothes, I will still buy him a few items, which never go amiss.

As for school supplies, I already have a few reams of graph paper and lined paper left over from last year, but I always try to have a box for each of them, as they usually tell me they have no paper in their folders at night, just when I can't do anything about it.

Pencils, coloured pencils, pens, erasers and so on are also on the list, waiting their turn to be bought and placed in the new schoolbag that is also waiting to be purchased. That's why I'm taking it step by step, ticking off what I already have and adjusting the fortnightly budget to get everything I need.
