Ya los juegos que tenemos en casa le resultan monótonos a mi hijo, y él no disfruta de jugar en solitario con autos o muñecos, así que tocaba improvisar un poco al momento de pedirme que jugáramos un rato.

Cómo el presupuesto cada vez está mas ajustado en casa, comprar un nuevo juego de mesa no es factible, además que dada su costumbre a la inmediatez, se aburre muy pronto. Así que me propuse a hacer un tablero de un ludo con lo que tenía en casa.

Recuperé unas cartulinas de un viejo almanaque para usar el lado sin imprimir, busqué las escuadras de dibujo y comencé a medir. Primero doble la cartulina por la mitad tanto en sentido horizontal como en vertical, de manera de tener las cuatro casillas principales ya delimitadas. A partir de esas líneas comencé a trazar las casillas para irle dando forma al juego.

Mientras tanto, le pedí a mi hijo que con masa moldeable fuera haciendo las fichas, que en un principio parecían creepers de Minecraft, hasta que optó por hacer cuadritos de colores para que fueran los jugadores, y como no teníamos dado, también lo hizo del mismo material, solo que él quiso hacer uno para cada uno, y pues ya que es nuestra versión, no lo vi mal.

Una vez terminados de hacer los trazos y las fichas, le expliqué las reglas del juego que yo recordaba, aunque a medida que íbamos jugando también recordé que si una ficha del equipo contrario caía en la misma casilla donde tenía una mía, me expulsaba al inicio, pero al decirle me dijo que lo jugáramos así, compartiendo la casilla en caso de que eso sucediera.

En la primera ronda gané yo, por una sola casilla al final del juego, así que con nuestro convenio de hacer revanchas, volvimos a ordenar todo para una segunda oportunidad, y esta vez si respetamos las normas de juego originales: solo se podía salir si el dado sacaba uno o seis, se expulsaba la ficha de la casilla si la de turno caía en la misma posición.

Por supuesto, la partida duró mucho más tiempo, pero igual se hizo rápida por la emoción que mi niño le imprimía tratando de ganar en esta oportunidad, cosa que al final se le dio, también por una sola ficha mía que quedó fuera de la meta.

Como quedaba un poco de tiempo antes de irme a preparar la cena, hicimos una tercera ronda que gané yo, puesto que la suerte me acompañó en los dados, sacando mayormente un seis, lo cual me hizo no solo sacar todas las piezas rápidamente, sino también avanzar velozmente por todo el tablero, mientras que su dado siempre le daba números pequeños y parecía un caracol mientras yo era la liebre, solo que a diferencia de la fábula, yo no me eché a dormir antes de llegar a la meta.

Luego de tanta "adrenalina" debimos parar para atender la cena, y fue mientras yo preparaba la comida, cuando mi pequeño tomó sus creyones y decidió darle un poco de color al tablero, además de agregarle la palabra LUDO en letras grandes, y vino a la cocina de lo más contento a mostrar cómo había quedado.

También hizo un nuevo dado combinando las masas de colores, para que usemos el mismo los dos.

Durante la cena, seguimos la rutina de ver algo de anime junto con mi hijo mayor y luego a dormir, pero de entrada, antes de las buenas noches, ya me pidió que al día siguiente volviéramos a jugar, lo cual me dio mucha satisfacción, pues estuvo toda la tarde lejos de la pantalla (salvo en la cena) y disfrutó de pasar el tiempo como lo hacía yo durante mi niñez.

As our household budget is increasingly tight, buying a new board game is not feasible, and given his habit of wanting instant gratification, he gets bored very quickly. So I decided to make a Ludo board with what I had at home.

I retrieved some cardboard from an old calendar to use the unprinted side, found my drawing squares, and began to measure. First, I folded the cardboard in half both horizontally and vertically, so that I had the four main squares already marked out. From those lines, I began to draw the squares to give shape to the game.

Meanwhile, I asked my son to make the pieces out of modeling clay. At first, they looked like Minecraft creepers, but then he decided to make colored squares to represent the players. Since we didn't have any dice, he made those out of the same material, but he wanted to make one for each of us. Since it's our version of the game, I didn't think it was a bad idea.

Once we had finished drawing the lines and making the pieces, I explained the rules of the game as I remembered them, although as we played, I also remembered that if a piece from the opposing team landed on the same square as one of mine, I was eliminated at the start. However, when I told him this, he said we should play that way, sharing the square if that happened.

I won the first round by a single square at the end of the game, so with our agreement to have a rematch, we rearranged everything for a second chance, and this time we followed the original rules of the game: you could only move if you rolled a one or a six, and the piece was removed from the square if the player's turn fell on the same position.

Of course, the game lasted much longer, but it still went quickly because of my son's excitement as he tried to win this time, which he did in the end, also because one of my pieces was left outside the finish line.

As there was still some time left before I had to go and prepare dinner, we played a third round, which I won, as luck was on my side with the dice, mostly rolling a six, which meant that not only did I get all my pieces out quickly, but I also advanced rapidly across the board, while his dice always gave him small numbers and he seemed like a snail while I was the hare, only unlike in the fable, I didn't fall asleep before reaching the finish line.

After so much “adrenaline,” we had to stop to make dinner, and while I was preparing the meal, my little one took his crayons and decided to add some color to the board, as well as writing the word LUDO in large letters. He came to the kitchen, very happy, to show me how it had turned out.

He also made a new die by combining the colored dough, so that we could both use it.

During dinner, we followed our routine of watching some anime with my older son and then going to bed, but before saying goodnight, he asked me if we could play again the next day, which made me very happy, as he had spent the whole afternoon away from the screen (except for dinner) and enjoyed spending time as I did during my childhood.
