El absurdo de vivir en "Orange County" (ESP/ENG)
When it comes to watching movies, I'm not one to select the comedy genre, unless the main character catches my attention. A Jim Carrey or Eddie Murphy, always guarantee that what I will see will be something good. However, today I gave Colin Hanks (yes, Tom Hanks' son), who I have seen in other more dramatic roles, a chance.
He popped up on Pluto Tv's movie on demand offering, and without much thought I clicked on it. What I found was a piece in which absurdity plays a leading role. It seems to be a 100% representation of Murphy's Law, because everything that could go wrong did.
We have Shaun (Hanks) coming out of high school, rather disengaged despite his brilliant academics, guided by a trio of friends who only think about surfing and having fun. Up to that point he wasn't even thinking about the future.
But in a plot twist, somewhat predictable, one of his friends dies drowned while surfing. That's when he begins to ask himself questions about what he wants to do with his life, which, together with a book he found on the beach and reads unstoppably, gives him what he considers to be the answer: he decides he wants to be a writer.
However, his personal life is a disaster, alcoholic mother, addict brother, disengaged father, sick stepfather and the two friends he has left after the incident, because they don't even know what they want. Of his entire personal circle, only his girlfriend seems normal.
Therefore, he considers that leaving Orange County, where he lives, is the best option to start his career. He applies to Stanfort University to which he is not admitted, and that is when his whole adventure begins.
The surprise of having Jack Black really gives a spicy touch to the whole plot, in which the entanglements are more and more ascending, during his determined race to get into the university of his choice.
Particularly, it is a comedy that appeals to the absurd to convey a very serious message: even if we insist on following a path, if what destiny has for us is something else, we will never get there by the road we are determined to cross.
It tells us about real family relationships, which despite having economic stability, lack values such as union, solidarity and respect.
Also about fidelity to dreams, I think that is the main theme, blurred between the follies of each of the characters, but if we interpret them, it is the intention of all of them.
Sometimes we consider that going out of the everyday will give us lights for what we want to achieve, when the answer is right in front of us.
A film directed by Jake Kasdan, from which you will surely come out with a different way of thinking about what you want to do with your destiny, and although it is about a teenager, I really believe that as adults, we often wonder if we are doing the right thing, so it applies to any age.
In the end, each character has his or her own redemption, with a closure so absurdly happy that you end up with a smile on your face.
Cuando de ver películas se trata, no soy de seleccionar el género comedia, a menos que el protagonista me llame la atención. Un Jim Carrey o Eddie Murphy, siempre garantizan que lo que veré será algo bueno. Sin embargo, hoy le di la oportunidad a Colin Hanks (si, el hijo de Tom Hanks), a quien he visto en otros papeles más dramáticos.
Apareció en la oferta de películas on demand de Pluto Tv, y sin pensarlo mucho le di click. Lo que encontré fue una pieza en la que el absurdo juega un papel protagónico. Pareciera que es la representación al 100% de la Ley de Murphy, pues todo lo que podía salir mal, así fue.
Tenemos a Shaun (Hanks) saliendo del secundario, bastante desentendido a pesar de su brillantes académica, guiado por un trío de amigos que solo piensan en surfear y divertirse. Hasta ese momento ni siquiera pensaba en el futuro.
Pero en un plot twist, un tanto previsible, uno de sus amigos muere ahogado mientras surfeaba. Es ahí cuando se empieza a plantear preguntas sobre qué quiere hacer con su vida, que aunado a un libro que encontró en la playa y que lee imparablemente, le da la que considera es la respuesta: decide que quiere ser escritor.
Sin embargo, su vida personal es un desastre, madre alcohólica, hermano adicto, padre desentendido, padrastro enfermo y los dos amigos que le quedan luego del incidente, pues ni siquiera saben qué quieren. De todo su círculo personal, solo su novia parece normal.
Por ello, considera que salir del condado de Orange, donde reside, es la mejor opción para empezar su carrera. Aplica a la universidad de Stanfort en la cual no es admitido, y es ahí cuando empieza toda su aventura.
La sorpresa de contar con Jack Black realmente le da un toque picante a toda la trama, en la que los enredos cada vez van más en ascenso, durante su empeñada carrera por entrar a la universidad de su preferencia.
Particularmente es una comedia que apela al absurdo para hacernos llegar un mensaje muy serio: aunque nos empeñemos en seguir una senda, si lo que el destino tiene para nosotros es otra cosa, no llegaremos nunca por el camino que estamos empeñados en cruzar.
Nos habla de verdaderas relaciones familiares, que a pesar de contar con estabilidad económica, carecen de valores como unión, solidaridad y respeto.
También sobre la fidelidad a los sueños, creo que ese es el tema principal, desdibujado entre las locuras de cada uno de los personajes, pero que si bien los interpretamos, es la intención de todos ellos.
A veces consideramos que salir de lo cotidiano nos dará luces para lo que queremos lograr, cuando la respuesta la tenemos frente a nosotros mismos.
Una película dirigida por Jake Kasdan, de la que seguro sales con otra manera de pensar sobre lo que quieres hacer con tu destino, y aunque se trata sobre un adolescente, realmente considero que siendo adultos, muchas veces nos planteamos si estamos haciendo lo correcto, por lo que aplica para cualquier edad.
Al final, cada personaje tiene su redención propia, con un cierre tan absurdamente feliz que terminas con una sonrisa.
