My kids' comics during COVID-19 / Los comics de mis hijos durante el COVID-19

Going through papers stored at home, I came across a series of comics that my oldest son used to make during the pandemic period, and of course I kept looking at them one by one, remembering that terrible time and thinking about how he channeled the forced confinement.

Those were hard days of homework at home, online classes that he never got used to, and a lot of loneliness, as both dad and I had to go to work, leaving my two sons alone. The internet was subscribed to a phone that we left for emergencies, so between them they tried to find a way to make the time pass quickly, at least until we adults arrived.

With the pages left over from the notebooks of the approved years, my eldest son first made up a magazine, writing short articles which, being journalists, caused us to laugh and dread, but in my case, I took the opportunity to correct spelling and syntax mistakes, and also guide him in the art of writing: learning to tell a story, real or fictitious, for a media outlet, is not like talking to friends in a coffee afternoon.

His main character was him, being a superhero, and in some cases, his younger brother was. The bad guys... you can guess who we were! Dad and I, of course, although between the two of us, I came out of it all right at the end of the story.

An amusing anecdote was that at the beginning, he didn't make the little notebook, but painted the story on the loose sheets, but when he wanted to make it up, he had to make an annotation of how to read it, because the pictures were out of order.

Eventually, I found an online drawing course, and of course I did my best to pay for it. From there he learned a lot about proportions and also about design, something that has helped him in his studies, so supporting him in that prank, ended up being of benefit for his future.

Revisando papeles guardados en casa, me encontré con una serie de comics que hacía mi hijo mayor en la época de pandemia, y por supuesto me quedé viéndolos uno por uno, recordando aquella época terrible y pensando en cómo canalizó el encierro obligado.

Fueron días duros de tareas en casa, clases en línea a las que nunca se llegó a habituar, y mucha soledad, pues tanto papá como yo debíamos ir a trabajar, quedando solos mis dos hijos. El tema del internet estaba suscrito a un teléfono que le dejábamos para casos de emergencia, así que entre ellos buscaban la manera de que el tiempo transcurriera rápido, por lo menos, hasta que llegáramos los adultos.

Con las hojas que quedaban de los cuadernos de los años aprobados, mi hijo mayor se inventó primeramente en hacer una revista, haciendo artículos escuetos a los que siendo periodistas, nos causaba entre risa y terror, pero en mi caso, aprovechaba para corregirle errores de ortografía, sintaxis, y además guiarlo en el arte de la redacción: aprender a contar una historia, real o ficticia, para un medio de comunicación, no es como hablar con los amigos en una tarde de café.

Su personaje principal era él, siendo un súper héroe, y en algunos casos, lo era su hermano menor. Los malos... ya pueden adivinar quienes éramos! papá y yo, por supuesto, aunque entre ambos, yo salía bien librada al final del cuento.

Una anécdota divertida fue que al inicio, no hacía el cuadernito, sino que iba pintando la historia en las hojas sueltas, pero cuando quiso compaginar, tuvo que hacer una acotación de cómo leerlo, pues los cuadros quedaron desordenados.

Con el tiempo, encontré un curso de dibujo en línea, y por supuesto hice todo lo posible para pagárselo. De ahí aprendió mucho sobre las proporciones y también sobre diseño, cosa que le ha servido en sus estudios, por lo que apoyarlo en esa travesura, terminó siendo de provecho para su futuro.
