Weapons | review; not impressive
If you have nothing else to do with your time, burning it watching Weapons works but otherwise, try not to even consider it.
I first came across this movie on X, I cannot really remember what the individual that posted about it said, but I was moved to save the image to look it up later. Truth is, I never looked it up, I just happened to stumble on it again when searching for what to kill time with and relax.
This is supposed to be a horror movie guys and I'll tell you, it does have scenes that are to be expected but what the movie is most successful at is keeping you wanting for what never happens.
What is the movie Weapons about?
Honestly, I don't know. It is one of those movies you have to look up the backstory online to completely understand and I really don't have the patience to do that so I'll just tell you what happens in the movie.
The story revolves around a woman who was sick and used some sort of dark magic to drain life from others around her to stay well. In weapons, she does this to 17 kids from her nephew's class plus his parents.
Note that this isn't revealed in the beginning. It focuses on leaving you blank and curious by taking you through the time the 17 kids went missing after mysteriously leaving home at around 2:17.
All 17 kids woke up, opened the front door and ran into the darkness. The one kid that showed up to school the next day was Alex, and it is revealed later that his aunt is behind the missing 17 kids and Alex actually helped her by bringing items owned by these kids home to her, which she used to control and draw these kids to her, away from home.
When you're told the story, it sounds like something that would be fun to watch but you'd be disappointed if you expect clarity and real horror.
This is because the movie lacks those.
First, it is never revealed what happened to Aunt that made her sick.
What the source of her evil power is and how it makes her well when she traps others under the spell.
A specific scene has a giant gun in the sky with the time the kids woke up and left home written on it but that was never explained.
The movie takes you through several flashbacks that could have just been executed as normal progressing scenes and you wouldn't feel any different about them.
There are just so many holes, so many unanswered questions. The idea of calling the movie “Weapons” in itself feels silly because why would that be the advertised theme when the movie ends up being centered on a woman who used dark magic to suck life from others to keep herself well?
There's not enough weaponization to make that name appropriate.
The movie was directed by Zach Cregger and I'd say that this is not his best work. I was pleased to watch “Companion” released earlier this year but “Weapons” is just disappointing.
I am being generous in rating this 4/10.

No need to watch it then , how I hate movies that do flash back. Thanks for the honest review
I get your views and kind of agree as the explanation of the great main plotline that got me really curious on the movie didn't live up to the hopes. At the same time, I really enjoyed it and I'm a fan of Zach Cregger who knows how to make movies from a technical point of view building some really good tension. That also is worth a lot. This is also just one of those movies with a lot of metaphores that you can't take literally which isn't for everyone.
Got any recommendations of Zach's?
Besides this, and Companion, haven't seen anything else he directed.
I don't think he had anything to do with Companion (Which I also really enjoyed.)
His only real previous film was Barbarian and you will notice the similarities if you watch that. I loved barbarian as the tension especially in the first half is off the charts. It also uses clever story telling from different angles like Weapons. The main downside is that the 2nd part gets a bit let's say 'unrealistic'. Still worth the watch if you enjoy these types of movies.
Great. Will look into Barbarian.
Now about Companion, looks like he did:
Ok looks like he's one of the producers of Companion, didn't know that. Great to know though, looks like I enjoy pretty much everything he touches.
