Paseo de Las Delicias: A December tour full of light in northern Maracay

Every year, the northern part of my city reinvents itself to offer locals and visitors alike a space full of magic during the holiday season. It's almost an unwritten tradition: waiting for December to arrive to see how certain corners of Maracay are transformed and take on a special glow. Among those iconic places that welcome hundreds of people is the Paseo de Las Delicias, a walkway that stretches from south to north and covers approximately 4.5 kilometers, making it one of the city's busiest urban green spaces.

Today, this walkway is much more than a thoroughfare. It is a space where people play sports, rest, chat, walk their pets, or simply stop to observe the rhythm of the city. Walking along the Paseo de Las Delicias is, in a way, immersing oneself in the everyday culture of Maracay, which blends the urban with the natural and has earned it the nickname Ciudad Jardín (Garden City).

This year, the promenade also unveiled a new area that has quickly become one of the most photographed spots: a sky of multicolored umbrellas, very similar to the one in Caracas, but with its own charm. Here, the contrast between the vibrant colors of the umbrellas and the natural greenery surrounding the walkway creates a welcoming and cheerful atmosphere, ideal for families to stop, chat, and, of course, take pictures.

As expected, this was my first stop. I decided to go early, while it was still daylight, because I wanted to capture all the intensity of the colors that this small space offers. Although the place is surrounded by the constant traffic of the avenue, you only have to look up to feel that you are disconnecting for a moment from the noise and immersing yourself in a different corner of the city.

As the afternoon wore on, the atmosphere changed completely. The lights accompanying the umbrellas began to turn on, forming small bright dots that resembled stars suspended in the sky. That detail undoubtedly adds a very Christmassy feel and makes the space feel even more special. Today, I can say that it has become one of my favorite places to visit this season.

After enjoying myself there for a while, I headed to the beginning of Paseo de Las Delicias to admire the Christmas decorations that adorn this area. Yellow and white lights predominate, accompanied by stars, angels, and curtains that catch the attention of everyone who passes by. However, the real stars—and the most photographed—are the famous “Osos de Las Delicias” (Bears of Las Delicias), as the people of Maracay have christened them. These are large metal structures, some covered with fabric and others, like the main bear, completely illuminated with white lights, which are simply beautiful.

This walk has undoubtedly been one of the most beautiful routes I have taken recently. Not only because of the beauty of the lights and decorations, but also because of something much more valuable: seeing the joy reflected on the faces of the children and families enjoying these spaces. I firmly believe that everyone who has the opportunity should visit it, walk around without rushing, and let themselves be amazed by the magic that, at least in December, transforms this corner of Maracay.
