Today I finally finished reading a novel I've wanted to read my whole life: Wuthering Heights, a literary classic worthy not only of reading, but of analyzing in depth and remembering forever.
Hoy finalmente terminé de leer una novela que toda mi vida quise leer, se trata de Cumbres Borrascosas, todo un clásico de la literatura digno no solo de leer, sino de analizar a profundidad y recordar para siempre.
Overview/Resumen
Heathcliff is a poor orphan boy who at some point arrives at a mansion where he dreams, Mr. Earnshaw receives him to take care of him, as time goes by, between living together, Heathcliff falls madly in love with Catherine, Mr. Earnshaw's daughter, but soon the class difference and the girl's ambition become evident, so she rejects him and prefers to marry Edgar Linton, a man of noble birth, with many properties, money and a good economic and social position. Obviously this greatly sours Heathcliff's character and even more so after the death of his beloved Catherine, so he decides to take revenge, one that threatens to destroy even the second generation with the romance between Catherine's daughter and her fiancé Hareton.
Heathcliff es un niño pobre y huérfano que en algún momento llega a una mansión donde el sueño, el señor Earnshaw lo recibe para cuidar de él, a medida que pasa el tiempo, entre la convivencia, Heathcliff se enamora perdidamente de Catherine, la hija del señor Earnshaw, pero pronto se hacen evidentes la diferencia de clases y la ambición de la muchacha, así que ella lo rechaza y prefiere casarse con Edgar Linton, un hombre de noble cuna, con muchas propiedades, dinero y una buena posición económica y social. Obviamente esto agria mucho el carácter de Heathcliff y todavía más luego de la muerte de su amada Catherine, así que decide tomar venganza, una que amenaza con destruir incluso a la segunda generación con el romance entre la hija de Catherine y su prometido Hareton.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
In my opinion the plot starts a little slow, I won't deny it, but it's not a boring plot at all, it's as if it gave you enough time to get to know the characters well, but little by little, when you least expect it you are already immersed in a host of emotions and feelings, at first you feel very sorry for Heathcliff, and as the years go by you begin to hate him, but in reality his character serves as a resource to illustrate something that has always existed but that at that time was even more evident: the class struggle and the impact that all the experiences lived during childhood can have on adulthood, which is when a person's character is formed.
En mi opinión la trama inicia un poco lenta, no lo voy a negar, pero para nada es una trama aburrida, es como si te diera el tiempo suficiente para conocer de sobra a los personajes, pero poco a poco, cuando menos lo esperas ya estás sumergido en un cúmulo de emociones y sentimientos, al inicio sientes mucha pena Heathcliff, y conforme van pasando los años comienzas a odiarlo, pero en realidad su personaje sirve como un recurso para ilustrar algo que siempre ha existido pero que en esa época se evidenciaba todavía más: la lucha de clases y el impacto que pueden llegar a tener en la adultez todas las experiencias vividas durante la infancia, que es cuando se forma el carácter de una persona.
Something I really liked about the novel is its gothic and romantic tone in which nature plays an important part of the story, as if it were another character, because in a certain way the emotions of all the characters are reflected in it: the weather, the clouds, the fog, etc.
Algo que me gustó mucho de la novela es su tinte gótico y romántico en el cuál la naturaleza forma parte importante de la historia, como si fuese un personaje más, pues de cierta manera las emociones de todos los personajes se reflejan en ella: el clima, las nubes, la niebla etc...
It should be noted that Wuthering Heights is not strictly a romantic novel, as perhaps Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen are. No, in this book, its author, Emily Brontë, wanted to show us another type of relationship, one that appears passionate at the beginning and promises to be the most intense romance in the world, but deep down it is just Passion and that's it, that is, an intense but selfish emotion. That's why Heathcliff lives tormented, because what he feels is a destructive obsession that goes beyond any noble and altruistic feeling like love. The same thing happens with Catherine, who is more faithful to the ideals instilled by her family (pursuing prestige and wealth) than to her own feelings. So under this premise we know that the book is full of intense emotions and ups and downs.
Hay que tomar en cuenta que Cumbres Borrascosas no es una novela romántica netamente, como quizá lo es orgullo y Prejuicio o Sentido y Sensibilidad de Jane Austen, no, en este libro, su autora, Emily Brontë, quiso mostrarnos otro tipo de relaciones, esas que se muestran pasionales al inicio y que prometen ser el romance más intenso del mundo, pero que en el fondo solo son Pasión y ya, es decir, una emoción intensa pero egoísta, por eso Heathcliff vive atormentado, porque lo que siente es una obsesión destructiva que va más allá de cualquier sentimiento noble y altruista como el amor. Lo mismo sucede con Catherine, que es más fiel a los ideales inculcados por su familia (perseguir el prestigio y la riqueza) que sus propios sentimientos. Así que bajo esta premisa sabemos que el libro está lleno de emociones intensas y altibajos.
And this brings me to the next point I would like to highlight, unlike other novels like the ones I mentioned, this one is not made with the intention of idealizing the characters (although there is nothing wrong with that, who hasn't sighed with Mr. Darcy and Colonel Brandom?) but Wuthering Heights presents us with characters with more nuances and emotional conflicts, they are not completely good or completely bad, Heathcliff, for example, as the central character is tragic, wild and vengeful while Catherine is a volatile character who struggles between love and ambition.
Y esto me lleva al siguiente punto que me gustaría resaltar, a diferencia de otras novelas como las que mencioné, esta no está hecha con la intención de idealizar a los personajes (Aunque eso no tiene nada de malo ¿Quién no suspiró con el señor Darcy y el Coronel Brandom?) pero Cumbres Borrascosas nos presenta personajes con más matices y conflictos emocionales, no son completamente buenos o completamente malos, Heathcliff, por ejemplo, como personaje central es trágico, salvaje y vengativo mientras Catherine es un personaje volátil que se debate entre el amor y la ambición.
The narrative is exquisite and very meticulous in its details. I like that it's structured between two narrators: Lockwood and Nelly Dean, because this gives the novel different perspectives and enriches the experience. So I truly recommend you read this gem at least once in your life. Thank you so much for allowing me the space to express myself 😉
La narrativa es exquisita y muy minuciosa en los detalles, me gusta que esté estructurada entre dos narradores: Lockwood y Nelly Dean, porque esto le da diferentes perspectivas a la novela y enriquece la experiencia. Un hermoso clásico Cumbres Borrascosas, es algo perturbante por momentos, pero amo esa atmosfera tan características y la toxicidad de los protagonistas. Creo que habrá sido un shock la historia para su época y eso me gusta más jajaja.
Sí, debió haber sido muy irreverente para su época, pero igualmente interesante jeje. Me dijeron que hay varias películas, me gustaría ver como hicieron la adaptación
