Tradition of blessed palms during Holy Week (ESP/ENG)
Hello friends, today I would like to tell you about my experience this past Sunday in what was, to call it somehow, the inauguration or opening of this Holy Week 2025 agenda, with a beautiful tradition that is known as “Palm Sunday” as all parishioners gather in churches to receive the palm fronds that will later be blessed by the priest. Join me in this vlog as I tell you about this beautiful Christian tradition that recalls an important biblical scene.
Hola amigos, hoy me gustaría hablarles de mi experiencia este domingo pasado en lo que fue, por llamarlo de alguna manera, la inauguración o apertura de esta agenda de Semana Santa 2025, con una hermosa tradición que se conoce como "Domingo de Ramos" ya que todos los feligreses se reúnen en las iglesias para recibir las hojas de palmas que posteriormente serán bendecidas por el sacerdote. Acompáñenme en este vlog mientras les hablo de esta hermosa tradición cristiana que recuerda una importante escena bíblica.
First of all, all the parishioners lined up in an orderly fashion to receive their palms, which were being distributed by some altar servers and deacons of the church, as well as by the youth of the pastoral ministry. It is something very nice because people began to congregate in the church very early, especially because they were showing the movie "The Passion of Christ" by Mel Gibson, which is one of the films that reflects in a more crude way what happened during the passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ.
En primer lugar todos los feligreses se formaron ordenadamente para recibir sus palmas, las cuales estaban repartiendo algunos monaguillos y diáconos de la iglesia, así como los jóvenes de la pastoral. Es algo muy bonito porque la gente comenzó a congregarse en el templo desde muy temprano, sobre todo porque estaban proyectando la película "La Pasión de Cristo" de Mel Gibson, la cuál es una de las que refleja de manera más cruda lo que ocurrió durante la pasión y muerte de nuestro señor Jesucristo.
Later, with his palm leaves in his hand, the priest began to tell us a little of what this action represented, which reminds us of the glorious arrival of Jesus to Jerusalem, in which he was received with jubilation by the inhabitants who waved palm leaves, this was considered a great honor and with it the kings or the military were entertained when they returned victorious from a war. This tradition is still followed today as a synonym of joy with which the people receive Jesus in their hearts and as a way of recognizing his spiritual greatness.
Posteriormente, ya con sus hojas de palma en la mano, el sacerdote comenzó a hablarnos un poco de lo que representaba esta acción, lo cuál nos recuerda la gloriosa llegada de Jesús a Jerusalén, en el cual fue recibido con júbilo por los habitantes que agitaban hojas de palma, esto era considerado como un gran honor y con ello se agasajaba a los reyes o a los militares cuando regresaban victoriosos de una guerra. Actualmente se sigue esta tradición como un sinónimo de alegría con la que el pueblo recibe a Jesús en su corazón y como una manera de reconocer su grandeza espiritual.
At the moment of the blessing the parishioners raise their palm leaves while the priest with the help of his team sprinkles holy water over them and all the people.
Al momento de la bendición los feligreses elevan sus hojas de palma mientras el sacerdote con ayuda de su equipo salpica agua bendita sobre ellas y todas las personas.
There I am with my blessed palm leaves. Usually (as you can see behind me in the first picture) people usually make crosses with those palm leaves and keep them as a symbol of faith, in some prominent place in the house. However, there are those who use them as a kind of amulet against evil, putting them behind the doors (they are very old, colonial customs) but the priest pointed out that they are not amulets, but symbols of Christian faith.
Allí estoy yo con mis hojas de palma bendita. Usualmente (tal como pueden ver detrás de mi en la primera foto) la gente suele hacer cruces con esas hojas de palmas y las conservan como un símbolo de fe, en algún lugar preponderante de la casa. Sin embargo no falta quien las utilice como una especie de amuleto contra el mal, poniéndolas detrás de las puertas (son costumbres muy antiguas, coloniales) sin embargo el sacerdote acaró que no son amuletos, sino símbolos de fe cristiana.
Then we went back into the church to listen to the mass which was very beautiful. All the people entered the church waving their palms and then sat in the pews to listen to the word of God. This Sunday's sermon was dedicated precisely to the passion and death of Jesus, and it is really disconcerting and very sad to hear that the same people who received Jesus with joy and great honors were the same people who condemned him and shouted Crucify him! who preferred Barabbas instead of that man with pious eyes who healed the sick and loved unconditionally, but to our joy the prophecy was fulfilled, Christ rose on the third day and since then he patiently waits for us to follow in his footsteps and honor his word.
Luego volvimos a entrar en el templo para escuchar la misa la cuál estuvo muy bonita. Todas las personas ingresaron a la iglesia agitando las palmas y posteriormente se sentaron en los bancos para escuchar la palabra de Dios. El sermón de este domingo fue dedicado precisamente a lo que fue la pasión y muerte de Jesús, y realmente es desconcertante y muy triste escuchar que ese mismo pueblo que recibió con júbilo y grandes honores a Jesús fue el mismo que lo condenó y gritaba ¡Crucifícalo! que prefirió a Barrabás en lugar de aquel hombre de ojos piadosos que curaba enfermos y amaba incondicionalmente, pero para nuestra alegría la profecía se cumplió, Cristo resucitó al tercer día y desde entonces aguarda pacientemente a que nosotros sigamos sus pasos y honremos su palabra.
