To Kill a Mockingbird [Book Review] ESP/ENG
Yesterday I finally finished a novel I've always wanted to read since I saw one of its film adaptations. It's To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, a novel with great depth that certainly left me with a lot to think about.
Ayer finalmente terminé una novela que siempre quise leer desde que vi una de sus adaptaciones cinematográficas, se trata de Matar a un Ruiseñor de Harper Lee, una novela con una gran profundidad que ciertamente me dejó con una gran reflexión.
Overview/Resumen
At the beginning of the story we see everything through the innocent eyes of Scout Finch, a six-year-old girl who lives in the American South in the 1930s, a difficult time, not only because the country is going through a financial crisis known as The Great Depression, but at the same time they also live in a deplorable system that segregates people according to their ethnic origin, however Scout is being raised with solid values based on justice, in fact her father, lawyer Atticus Finch, defends a black man who was unjustly accused of having raped a young white woman.
Al inicio de la historia percibimos todo desde los ojos inocentes de Scout Finch, una niña de seis años que vive en el sur de Estados Unidos en los años 30, una época difícil, no solo porque el país atraviesa por una crisis financiera conocida como La Gran Depresión, pero al mismo tiempo también viven en un deplorable sistema que segrega a las personas de acuerdo con su origen étnico, sin embargo Scout está siendo criada con sólidos valores basados en la justicia, de hecho su padre, el abogado Atticus Finch, defiende a un hombre negro que fue acusado injustamente de haber ultrajado a una joven blanca.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
The plot is interesting but I will not deny that I experienced many moments of helplessness, especially regarding the treatment that black people received during that time of racial segregation, especially in that area where the events take place, the Finch children in this way represent the nightingale, and the nightingale in turn is a metaphor for the innocence that must be preserved, they perceive the world from tenderness, but as the plot progresses and they grow up they learn about the injustice in which the world moves, on the other hand the children become interested in their neighbor Boo Radley, since he is a lonely guy and almost never leaves the house, which catches their attention a lot, and honestly also becomes a point of interest for the reader, precisely out of curiosity.
La trama es interesante pero no negaré que viví muchos momentos de impotencia, sobre todo en lo que se refiere al trato que recibían las personas negras en esa época de segregación racial, sobre todo en esa zona donde se desarrollan los hechos, los niños Finch de esta manera representan al ruiseñor, y el ruiseñor a su vez es una metáfora de la inocencia que debe preservarse, ellos perciben el mundo desde la ternura, pero a medida que la trama avanza y ellos crecen van conociendo la injusticia en la cual se mueve el mundo, por otra parte los niños se interesan en su vecino Boo Radley, ya que es un tipo solitario y casi nunca sale de casa, lo cuál llama mucho su atención, y honestamente también se vuelve un punto de interés para el lector, precisamente por curiosidad.
During the trial, favoritism and injustice are evident, which makes one as a reader feel extremely helpless, since the jury has an impressive moral blindness, determined by hatred and prejudice, but at the same time I consider this to be important precisely because by seeing it from this perspective we can dimension how terrible the way of thinking of some people was at that time and therefore we must prevent this type of situations from happening again. On the other hand, I was pleasantly impressed by the courage of Atticus Finch who defended the truth tooth and nail despite what others thought, this fosters the value of empathy, and in this way I was moved to see how the Finch brothers, as they acquire maturity, feel admiration for their father when they realize how brave and fair he is.
Durante el juicio se evidencia el favoritismo y la injusticia, lo cuál hace que uno como lector sienta muchísima impotencia, pues el jurado tiene una ceguera moral impresionante, determinada por el odio y el prejuicio, pero al mismo tiempo considero que esto es importante precisamente porque al verlo desde esta perspectiva podemos dimensionar lo terrible que era la forma de pensar de algunos en esa época y por lo tanto debemos evitar que este tipo de situaciones vuelvan a ocurrir. Por otra parte me impresionó gratamente la valentía de Atticus Finch que defendió la verdad con uñas y dientes a pesar de lo que opinaban los demás, esto fomenta el valor de la empatía, y de esta manera me conmovió ver como los hermanos Finch, a medida que van adquiriendo madurez sienten admiración por su padre al comprobar lo valiente y justo que es.
What I am going to say next I say from my point of view as an author (since I also write) and not as a reader, but honestly narrating a novel from the point of view of a child is not easy to achieve since you must avoid falling into exaggeration, we have all been children, but few of us remember how we thought and how we perceived the world then, however Harper Lee shows us very logical thoughts from the point of view of children, they see life with simplicity, they are able to perceive injustices and feel indignation, but they consider that it is easy to face it because they are not able to dimension that there are canons and codes that although many times they are unfair, we are forced to follow.
Esto que diré a continuación lo digo desde mi punto de vista como autora (ya que también escribo) y no como lectora, pero honestamente narrar una novela desde el punto de vista de un niño no es nada fácil de lograr ya que se debe evitar caer en la exageración, todos hemos sido niños, pero pocos recordamos como pensábamos y como percibíamos el mundo entonces, sin embargo Harper Lee nos muestra pensamientos muy lógicos desde el punto de vista de los niños, ellos ven la vida con simplicidad, son capaces de percibir las injusticias y de sentir indignación, pero consideran que es fácil hacerle frente por que no son capaces de dimensionar que hay cánones y códigos que aunque muchas veces son injustos, nos vemos forzados a seguir.
And finally, we have the character development, which I find to be both accurate and masterful. The children go from practicing "innocent racism," so to speak, since it's the way they perceived the world and therefore imitated behaviors and repeated what they heard, to being able to identify that this behavior was not right at all and that we are all equal, regardless of skin color.
Y finalmente tenemos el desarrollo de personajes, el cuál me parece acertado y magistral, los niños pasan de practicar un "racismo inocente" por llamarlo de alguna forma, ya que es la manera en que estuvieron percibiendo el mundo y por lo tanto imitaban conductas y repetían lo que escuchaban, a ser capaces de identificar que esta conducta no estaba nada bien y que todos somos iguales sin importar el color de piel.
For me, it has been a tremendous pleasure to read this masterpiece, and from now on, I will treasure it in my heart as one of my favorite books, so I highly recommend it.

Qué bien que por fin leíste esa novela, ¡es una joya! Y coincido contigo en que es de esos libros que se te quedan grabados. La forma en que Harper Lee te mete en la historia a través de los ojos de una niña es increíble. Sentí la misma impotencia en el juicio, es un golpe de realidad muy fuerte. Y sí, el personaje de Atticus Finch es de lo mejor, un verdadero ejemplo de lo que significa ser una persona justa. Me alegro que te haya gustado tanto.
Sí, el libro es buenísimo, una gran dosis de realidad pero también de buenas lecciones, una muestra de que a pesar de las injusticias y las cosas terribles de este mundo, aún hay personas justas, dispuestas a luchar por la verdad. Muchas gracia por leer y comentar 😃
