The Water Nymph of the Pond [Tale Review and Analysis] ESP/ENG

Continuing with my literary journey through the universe of the famous and enigmatic Grimm brothers, today we come to another of their lesser-known stories, but one that amazed me as soon as I read it because it completely breaks away from the clichés that usually characterize fairy tales. because even though it has a happy ending (something I appreciate because I love happy endings), it has a very important evolutionary cycle for its main characters, which makes the experience of reunion and the final reward even more valuable.
Siguiendo con mi paseo literario a través del universo de los famosos y enigmáticos hermanos Grimm, hoy llegamos a otro de sus cuentos menos conocidos pero que en cuanto lo leí quedé maravillada porque se sale por completo de los clichés que por lo general caracterizan los cuentos de hadas, ya que a pesar de que tiene un final feliz (algo que agradezco porque amo los finales felices) tiene un ciclo evolutivo muy importante para sus personajes principales, lo que hace que la experiencia del reencuentro y la recompensa final sea aún más valorada.
Overview/Resumen
A miller who had lost his fortune was walking near a pond when suddenly an Ondine (water nymph) told him that she would solve his financial problems, but in exchange he had to give her what had just been born in his house. He accepted the deal, thinking it was a dog or a cat, but when he got home he realized that his wife had just given birth, so they mutually agreed to keep the child away from ponds, for fear that the Ondine would take him away. Time passed, the miller's son grew up and became a skilled hunter. He married and went to live with his wife in the forest. Everything was going well until one day when he hunted a deer, gutted it, and wanted to wash his hands in the pond. The Ondine sucked him down to the bottom of the water.
Un molinero que perdió su fortuna estaba paseando cerca de un estanque, cuando de pronto una Ondina (Ninfa de las aguas) le dijo que resolvería sus problemas económicos pero él a cambio debía entregarle lo que acababa de nacer en su casa, él aceptó el trato pensando que se trataba de algún perro o gato, pero al llegar a casa se dio cuenta que su esposa acababa de dar a luz, así que en mutuo acuerdo decidieron mantener al niño alejado de los estanques, por temor a que la Ondina se lo llevara. El tiempo pasó, el hijo del molinero creció y se convirtió en un hábil cazador, se casó y se fue a vivir con su esposa en el bosque. Todo iba bien hasta que en una ocasión en que cazó un ciervo, lo destripó y quiso lavar sus manos en el agua del estanque, la Ondina lo absorbió hasta el fondo de las aguas.
The hunter's wife, upon discovering what had happened, began to lament on the banks of the pond, but she fell asleep and in her dreams she climbed a mountain and came to a house inhabited by an old woman. so when she woke up the next day, the woman decided to climb that mountain and reach the house she had seen in her dreams. Sure enough, there was an old woman who gave her a golden comb and asked her to comb her hair during the full moon on the banks of the pond and wait to see what happened. The woman did so, and when she finished, only her husband's head emerged from the pond, but he was immediately dragged back down.
La esposa del cazador, al descubrir lo que había, pasado comenzó a lamentarse a orillas del estanque, pero se quedó dormida y en sueños escaló una montaña y llegó a una casa que era habitada por una anciana, así que al despertar al día siguiente la mujer decidió escalar esa montaña y llegar a la casa que vio en sueños, efectivamente había una anciana que le dio un peine de oro y le pidió que se peinara los cabellos durante la luna llena a orillas del estanque, y que esperara a ver que pasaba, así lo hizo la mujer, y cuando terminó solo emergió la cabeza de su esposo fuera del estanque, pero inmediatamente fue arrastrado abajo.
There were several attempts in which the woman returned to the house in the mountains to receive new instructions and advice from the old woman, but when she carried them out in the pond, even though her husband came out of the pond more and more each time, a higher force pushed him back to the bottom. In fact, on one occasion when he managed to get completely out of the pond and ran away with his wife, a giant wave caught up with them, turning her into a toad and him into a frog. Then that same wave separated them from each other, and although they regained their human form, they had to live apart from each other for a long time, in different regions for years. Until one day, when they were both herding sheep, they met again. Although they did not recognize each other at first, she cried with emotion when he began to play a familiar melody on his flute, as it was the same melody she had played for him on the instructions of the old woman on one of the occasions when she tried to rescue him. so in this way they recognized each other and were finally reunited, and of course they were very happy 😃.
Hubo varios intentos en los que la mujer regresaba a la casa de la montaña para recibir nuevas instrucciones y consejos de la anciana, pero cuando los llevaba a cabo en el estanque, a pesar de que cada vez su marido salía más y más del estanque, una fuerza superior volvía a empujarlo al fondo, de hecho, en una ocasión en que logró salir completamente del estanque y huyó corriendo junto con su esposa, una ola gigante los alcanzó, convirtiéndolos a ella en sapo y a él en rana, luego esa misma ola los distanció el uno del otro y aunque recuperaron su forma humana tuvieron que vivir distanciados el un del otro por largo tiempo, en regiones diferentes durante años. Hasta que en una ocasión en que ambos pastoreaban ovejas se encontraron y aunque no se reconocieron en un inicio, luego ella lloró de conmoción cuando él comenzó a tocar una conocida melodía con su flauta, ya que era la misma melodía que ella había tocado para él por instrucciones de la anciana en una de las ocasiones en que intentó rescatarlo, así que de esta manera se reconocieron y reencontraron finalmente, y desde luego fueron muy felices 😃.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
There are several different versions of this story, but the one I have just summarized for you is my favorite. I really like it because, as I said at the beginning of this review, it breaks away from the conventions and clichés of fairy tales (helpless princesses being rescued). Obviously, I have nothing against this, but I like to come across something different from time to time 😃. For example, in this case, it is not about princesses or any noble or member of a royal court. it's about millers, peasants, and hunters, ordinary people of the proletariat. On the other hand, Ondina, although a mystical and ethereal being, is not represented in this story like most fairies or nymphs, as a kind and light-filled being, but rather as the opposite, a dangerous and capricious being 😲, as well as the epicenter of the conflict.
Este cuento tiene algunas versiones diferentes, pero esta que acabo de resumir para ustedes es mi favorita, me gusta mucho porque tal como les dije al inicio de esta review, se sale de los convencionalismos y clichés de los cuentos de hadas (Princesas indefensas rescatadas) obviamente no tengo nada en contra de esto sino que me gusta de vez en cuando encontrarme con algo diferente 😃, por ejemplo en en este caso no se trata de princesas ni de ningún noble o miembro de una corte real, se trata de molineros, campesinos y cazadores, gente común del proletariado, por otra parte la Ondina, si bien es un ser místico y etéreo no es representada en este cuento como la mayoría de hadas o ninfas, como un ser bondadoso y lleno de luz, sino como todo lo contrario, un ser peligroso y caprichoso 😲, además del epicentro del conflicto.
Last but not least, we have a strengthened image of the female sex (normally represented as delicate and fragile). In this case, the hunter's wife represents the country woman and her strength very well. She would not wait for others to solve her problems, but would directly seek solutions (she climbed a mountain, performed all the rituals, tried to rescue her husband in many different ways). She was skilled and let herself be guided by her intuition, deducing that the dream she had was trying to tell her something, unlike the miller (the hunter's father) who, in his quest for wealth, did not stop to think that his wife was pregnant and that it was probably she who had given birth, and that it was this baby that the Ondine was waiting for.
Y por último pero no menos importante tenemos una imagen fortalecida del sexo femenino (normalmente representado como un ser delicado y frágil) en este caso la esposa del cazador representa muy bien a la mujer de campo y su fortaleza, ella no esperaría a que otros resuelvan sus problemas, sino que directamente busca las soluciones, (escaló una montaña, llevó a cabo todos los rituales, intentó rescatar a su marido de muchas formas diferentes) tuvo pericia y se dejó llevar por la intuición al deducir que el sueño que tuvo intentaba decirle algo, a diferencia del molinero (padre del cazador) que en aras de obtener riquezas no se detuvo a pensar que su esposa estaba embarazada y que probablemente era ella quien había dado a luz, y que era ese bebé el que la Ondina esperaba 🤦♀
In addition, the story serves as a warning about the dangers of making promises: everything that is promised must be fulfilled, so it is important to know what to promise and to whom. On the other hand, the pond can somehow represent the duality between wealth and poverty (the miller became rich in goods but was poor mentally, he did not have the ability to measure the consequences of his promise). It also represents the duality between the human world and the ethereal world of supernatural beings.
Además, el cuento sirve como advertencia sobre los peligros de hacer promesas, todo lo que se promete debe cumplirse, por eso hay que saber qué prometer y a quién. Por otra parte el estanque de alguna forma puede representar la dualidad entre la riqueza y la pobreza (el molinero se hizo rico en bienes pero era pobre mentalmente, no tuvo la capacidad de medir las consecuencias de su promesa) También representa la dualidad entre el mundo humano y el etéreo mundo de los seres sobrenaturales.
But the story also shows us true love as a weapon capable of overcoming time and distance. The love that the hunter and his wife felt for each other allowed them to keep hope alive and ultimately prevailed despite the supernatural forces that separated them in the beginning. This was ultimately the reward for perseverance and constancy.
Pero el cuento también nos muestra al amor verdadero como un arma capaz de vencer el tiempo y la distancia, el amor que el cazador y su esposa sentían el uno por el otro les permitió mantener viva la esperanza y finalmente prevaleció a pesar de las fuerzas sobrenaturales que los separaron en un inicio. Esta fue finalmente la recompensa de la perseverancia y la constancia.
