Oliver Twist [Book Review] ESP/ENG

Today I want to talk to you about a classic of English literature that I really enjoyed reading when I was a child. Irecently reread it as an adult and I realize that it was a completely different experience (I have always said that books should be read at different stages of life to find more nuances) and for that reason I wanted to give you my opinion. I am referring to Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, a novel that both adults and children can perfectly enjoy.
Hoy pretendo hablarles de un clásico de la literatura inglesa y que me gustaba mucho leer cuando era niña, recientemente volví a leerlo de adulta y me doy cuanta que fue una experiencia completamente diferente (siempre he dicho que los libros se deben leer en diferentes etapas de la vida para poder hallar más matices) y por esa razón quise darles a ustedes mi opinión, me refiero a Oliver Twist de Charles Dickens, una novela que pueden disfrutar perfectamente grandes y chicos.
Overview/Resumen
Oliver is an orphan boy who grows up in a hospice where he is constantly mistreated. On one occasion he was "adopted" (if I can use that word because in reality I would say he was enslaved) by a gravedigger where he also has to suffer the constant mockery of another child who mocks the death of Oliver's mother. For this reason, the little orphan decides to run away, heading to the troubled city of London where he meets a boy named Jacob Dawkins, but who calls himself "Scoundrel" and he takes him to Fagin, a despicable old man who trains children to be pickpockets. Poor Oliver lives many hardships until he is finally adopted by someone kind-hearted, and finally the child's true identity comes to light, leaving more than one surprised.
Oliver es un niño huérfano que crece en un hospicio donde es maltratado constantemente. En una ocasión fue "adoptado" (si es que puedo usar esa palabra porque en realidad yo diría que fue esclavizado) por un sepulturero donde además tiene que sufrir la constante burla de otro niño que se burla de la muerte de la madre de Oliver, por esta razón el pequeño huérfano decide huir dirigiéndose a la convulsionada ciudad de Londres donde conoce a un niño llamado Jacobo Dawkins, pero que se hace llamar a sí mismo "Truhán" y él lo conduce con Fagin, un anciano despreciable que entrena a los niños para que sean carteristas. El pobre Oliver vive muchas dificultades hasta que finalmente es adoptado por alguien de buen corazón, y finalmente la verdadera identidad del niño sale a la luz, dejando a más de uno sorprendido.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
This is a novel that is set in Victorian England, so now that I was able to read it as an adult I realized something, it is a criticism of the system of that time, especially the amendment of the Poor Law of 1834 that came to replace the previous parish system, this was terribly harmful to the most vulnerable since it prohibited outside help, they only helped workhouses, but it was extremely precarious help, which forced very vulnerable people (regardless of whether they were sick, children, elderly or pregnant women) to work hard for miserable wages, often in factories where working conditions were terrible. That's why I feel that Charles Dickens created Oliver as a way to speak out against the injustices committed against the poor, and especially against the orphaned children of Victorian England, but that system was not only unfair, but also hypocritical, because by taking away all the rights of these children, they forced them to commit crimes in order to survive, and when they were caught, they then brought the full weight of the law down on them.
Esta es una novela que está ambientada en la época victoriana en Inglaterra, así que ahora que yo pude leerla siendo adulta me di cuenta de algo, es una critica al sistema de esa época, en especial a la enmienda de la ley de pobres de 1834 que llegó a reemplazar al anterior sistema parroquial, esto fue terriblemente perjudicial para los más vulnerables ya que prohibía las ayudas externas, solamente ayudaban a las casas de trabajo, pero era una ayuda extremadamente precaria, lo que obligaba a las personas muy vulnerables (sin importar si eran enfermos, niños, ancianos o mujeres embarazadas) a trabajar duro por un salario miserable, a menudo en fábricas donde las condiciones de trabajo eran terribles. Por eso siento que Charles Dickens creó a Oliver como una manera de pronunciarse contra las injusticias cometidas contra los pobres, y en especial contra los niños huérfanos de la Inglaterra victoriana, pero ese sistema no solo era injusto, sino también hipócrita, porque al quitarles todos los derechos a estos niños los orillaban a delinquir para poder subsistir, y cuando los atrapaban entonces dejaban caer todo el peso de la ley sobre ellos.
The book explores many themes and contains several valuable lessons such as the loyalty, nobility and kindness of Oliver that contrasts with the world of corruption in which he lives, he is constantly seduced by the temptation of Fagin and his entourage of delinquent children, because they are resentful of life by being forced to live on the margins of society, but Oliver, who has witnessed the empathy of other people like Nancy, Rose and Mr. Brownlow can resist in the name of loyalty and honesty, he detests that underworld full of lies and baseness because just as the system has not offered him concrete and unconditional help, on the contrary, Fagin only wanted to take advantage of him, besides Oliver was not looking for riches or a substantial meal that would satisfy them ephemerally, he was looking for love, understanding, respect and care, something he found in the warmth of Rose, her adoptive mother and Mr. Brownlow.
El libro explora muchos temas y contiene varias enseñanzas valiosas como la lealtad, la nobleza y la bondad de Oliver que contrasta con el mundo de corrupción en el que vive, constantemente es seducido por la tentación de Fagin y su séquito de niños delincuentes, porque ellos están resentidos con la vida al verse obligados a vivir al margen de la sociedad, pero Oliver, quién ha sido testigo de la empatía de otras personas como Nancy, Rose y el señor Brownlow puede resistir en nombre de la lealtad y honestidad, él detesta ese bajo mundo lleno de mentiras y bajeza porque al igual que el sistema tampoco le ha ofrecido una ayuda concreta e incondicional, al contrario, Fagin solo quería aprovecharse de él, además Oliver no estaba en busca de riquezas o una comida sustanciosa que los satisficiera efímeramente, él buscaba amor, comprensión, respeto y cuidados, algo que encontró al calor de Rose, la madre adoptiva de ella y el señor Brownlow.
The range of characters that Dickens incorporates into the story serve to illustrate human nature in a very complete way: there are people who are cruel and vile, but who at some point can find redemption motivated by a desire to find peace, as is the case of Fagin (who probably lived on the fringes of society his entire life); there are inhuman people who seek to do harm to the end, like Bill Sikes; people who were forced to act in a certain way and who, in the end, although they are acting wrongly, are nothing more than victims of circumstances, like Nancy, who ultimately chose to do the right thing; and there are also wonderful people like Rose, Olliver, the doctor, and Mr. Brownlow. All of this emphasizes something that I have always believed, that the environment is influential but not determining in the personality of each individual; in the end, good and evil is a choice that everyone can make.
La gama de personajes que Dickens incorpora en la historia sirven para ilustrar la naturaleza humana de una forma muy completa: existen personas que son crueles y ruines, pero que en algún punto pueden llegar a encontrar la redención motivados por un deseo de encontrar paz, como es el caso de Fagin (quién probablemente vivió al margen de la sociedad su vida entera) hay personas inhumanas que buscar hacer daño hasta el fin como Bill Sikes, personas que fueron obligadas a actuar de determinada manera y que al final, aunque estén actuando mal, no son más que víctimas de las circunstancias, como Nancy, quién al final de cuentas eligió hacer lo correcto, y también hay personas maravillosas como Rose, Olliver, el médico y el señor Brownlow. Todo esto enfatiza algo que yo siempre he creído, que el entorno es influyente pero no determinante en la personalidad de cada individuo, al final, el bien y el mal es una elección que cada quién puede hacer.

Oliver Twist, como me gustó ese libro, pero sentí muchísima lástima por Nancy, pienso que su final fue extremadamente cruel.

Bueno la verdad con mucha honestidad nunca he leído esta lectura o de alguna manera me haya relacionado con esta historia en mi pasado Sin embargo leer tu reseña me ha podido sumergir en esta historia en la que contrastas muy bien la experiencia que has tenido al leer esta historia con la realidad en la que se vivió en una época pasada incluso estás más atenta con esas situaciones que Honestamente yo ignoro totalmente sin embargo me he podido relacionar muchísimo con la reseña que has hecho Excelente post.
Probablemente te guste el libro, está lleno de muchos matices y reflexiones. La época victoriana estaba llena de contrastes entre las clases sociales, El Retrato de Dorian Gray también hace alusión a eso, muchos vivían en un espejismo mientras la Inglaterra de los suburbios se hundía en el fango, o peor aún, en el hedor del río Támesis.
