On this occasion, I bring to your attention what I consider to be one of the most profound and thought-provoking stories in the Grimm brothers' repertoire, one that from the outset makes us think deeply and evaluate our own attitude towards life. As always, I will begin by providing some context with a summary of the story so that you can get an idea of what it is about, in case you have not yet read it.
Para esta ocasión traigo al análisis la que considero una de las historias más profundas y reflexivas del repertorio de los hermanos Grimm, una que desde el inicio nos hace pensar mucho y evaluar nuestra propia actitud ante la vida. Como siempre a continuación les daré contexto con un resumen del cuento para que puedan conocer de qué se trata, en caso de que aún no lo hayan leído.
Overview/Resumen
In a kingdom far away, there lived a very prosperous king in his castle. His castle was enormous and surrounded by a forest where all kinds of animals lived. On one occasion, the king sent a hunter to bring back provisions, but he did not return. So, the king sent a second hunter to look for the first, but he did not return either. so the forest began to gain a bad reputation. Years passed, and no one wanted to enter that forest, until one day a stranger in search of provisions asked the king for permission to go hunting in the forest. The king only allowed it because the man said he would do so at his own risk and responsibility.
En un reino muy lejano vivía en su castillo un rey muy próspero, su castillo era enorme y estaba rodeado de un bosque en el que había toda clase de animales, en una ocasión el rey envió a un cazador para que trajera provisiones, pero este no regresó, así que el rey envió a un segundo en busca del primero y tampoco volvió, así que el bosque comenzó a ganar mala fama, de esta manera pasaron los años y nadie quería adentrarse en ese bosque, hasta que un día un forastero en busca de provisiones pidió permiso al rey para ir a cazar al bosque, y el rey solo lo permitió porque el hombre dijo que lo haría bajo su propia responsabilidad y riesgo.
When they reached the forest, the hunter's dog approached a well, but a long arm came out of it, grabbed the dog, and pulled it under. 😲 When the hunter saw this, he was astonished and ran off to find three men to help him drain the water from the well with buckets. When they did so, they were surprised to discover, at the bottom, a strange man with very long hair and beard, with skin tanned like iron oxide. They tied him up and took him to the palace. The king had him locked up in a special room and entrusted the key to the queen. But the king had an annoying eight-year-old son who was arrogant and haughty, and on one occasion, while he was playing with his golden ball, it rolled into the cell where the strange man was. The prince demanded that he return it, but the man said he would only do so if the prince opened the cell door. One day, the boy finally agreed and went to get the key to the cell, which he found under his mother's pillow, just as the prisoner had told him.
Al llegar bosque el perro del cazador se acercó a un pozo, pero un brazo largo salió de allí, lo capturó y lo sumergió 😲, al ver esto el cazador se asombró y salió corriendo en busca de tres hombres para que lo ayudaran a drenar con cubetas el agua del pozo. Cuando lo hicieron se sorprendieron al descubrir, allá en el fondo, a un hombre extraño con cabello y barba muy largos, con la piel bronceada como óxido de hierro 😮. Lo ataron y lo llevaron al palacio. El rey mandó a encerrarlo en una habitación especial y confió la llave a la reina. Pero el rey tenía un molesto hijo de ocho años que era arrogante y soberbio, y en una ocasión en que estaba jugando con su pelota de oro, esta se fue rodando hasta adentrarse en la celda donde estaba el extraño hombre, entonces el príncipe le exigió que se la devolviera, pero él le dijo que solo lo haría si el príncipe le abría la puerta de la celda, y un día, el niño finalmente accedió y fue a tomar la llave de la celda, la cuál encontró debajo de la almohada de su madre, tal como le había indicado el prisionero.
The prince also decided to flee with the savage because he was afraid of his father's reprisals for having freed the prisoner. The next day, as his only task, the savage man took the prince to a spring and asked him to guard the water, which was pure and crystal clear. From time to time, the boy could see a snake or a goldfish, Then, feeling very curious, he dipped the tip of his finger into the water, which turned gold. When the savage returned, he asked what had happened to the water, and the prince replied that nothing bad had happened. but he kept his finger out of sight of the savage. However, the savage discovered it and asked him not to put anything else in the water. Nevertheless, on several occasions, something fell in by accident. Once, when the boy was looking at his reflection, the tips of his hair touched the water, and his hair turned gold. With that, the savage expelled him from his side 😟 but told him that whenever he needed him, he could come to the forest shouting “Iron John!” and he would come to his aid.
El príncipe además decidió huir con el salvaje porque tenía miedo de las represalias de su padre, al haber liberado al prisionero. Al día siguiente, como única tarea, el hombre salvaje llevó al príncipe a un manantial y le pidió que custodiara el agua, que era pura y cristalina, de vez en cuando el niño podía ver alguna serpiente o pez dorado, entonces, sintiendo mucha curiosidad, sumergió la punta de un dedo, el cual se volvió dorado, entonces cuando regresó el salvaje preguntó que le había sucedido al agua y él príncipe respondió que no sucedía nada malo, pero aún así mantuvo el dedo fuera del alcance de la vista del salvaje, pero él lo descubrió, aunque le pidió que no volviera a introducir nada en el agua, no obstante en varias ocasiones algo caía por accidente, incluso, en una ocasión en el que el niño estaba mirando su reflejo, la punta de sus cabellos tocó el agua y entonces su cabello se tornó dorado. Con esto el salvaje lo expulsó de su lado 😟 pero le dijo que siempre que lo necesitara, podría llegar al bosque gritando "¡Juan de Hierro!" entonces él acudiría en su auxiilio.
Thus, the young prince was left to fend for himself, so he went to the village to try to find a job to support himself, but he could not do anything because he had not learned any trade. In this way, he arrived at the palace of that kingdom, where he tried his hand at various jobs until the cook hired him as a gardener. One day, the princess, looking at the reflection of the sun in the boy's golden hair, asked him to bring her a bouquet of flowers. The king asked him to take off his hat, but he refused. When the princess took off his hat, they could see his beautiful blond hair, which left them in awe. The king then gave the boy gold coins, but he did not care about the coins and gave them to the gardener for his children to play with.
De esta manera el joven príncipe quedó de su cuenta, así que se fue al pueblo para intentar conseguir un empleo para poder subsistir, pero no podía hacer nada porque no había aprendido oficio alguno, de esta manera llegó al palacio de ese reino, en el cuál intentó hacer algunos oficios, hasta que el cocinero lo empleó como jardinero. Un día la princesa, al mirar el reflejo del sol en los dorados cabellos del chico, le pidió que le trajera un ramo de flores. El rey le pidió que se quitase el sombrero, pero él no quería y cuando la princesa le quitó el sombrero pudieron ver la hermosa cabellera rubia que los dejó admirados. El rey entonces le dio monedas de oro al muchacho, pero él no le dio importancia a las monedas y se las regaló al jardinero para que sus hijos jugaran con ellas.
Once, when the country went to war, the boy asked to go and fight, but everyone laughed at him. So he asked for a horse, and the soldiers replied that he could take one from the stable when they had left to fight. The boy went into the stable and found a lame horse, but he rode it anyway and arrived at the forest where Iron John lived. The man came out to meet him, and the boy asked him for a strong horse. Iron John gave him more than that: he offered him weapons, helmets, armor, horses, and an entire army at his command. The young man then rode to the place where the invading army was destroying the king's army, and he attacked them, freeing the kingdom from the invaders. He then rode back to the forest to return everything Iron John had given him, as he wanted his lame horse back. And so, after a few more trials he had to pass, the king discovered that he was a hero and finally granted him the hand of his daughter, and Juan de Hierro offered him riches in exchange for having freed him from the prison where he had previously been held.
En una ocasión el país entró en guerra, él niño pidió ir a luchar pero todos se burlaron de él, entonces él solicitó un caballo y los soldados respondieron que podría tomar uno del establo cuando ellos se hubiesen marchado a luchar, entonces el niño entró al establo y halló un caballo cojo, pero de todos modos lo montó y llegó al bosque donde vivía Juan de Hierro, el hombre salió a su encuentro, el niño le pidió un caballo fuerte y Juan de Hierro le dio más que eso, le ofreció armas, yelmos, armaduras, caballos y todo un ejercito a su cargo. El joven cabalgó entonces al lugar donde el ejercito invasor estaba destruyendo al del rey, y él los atacó, liberando al reino de los invasores, posteriormente cabalgó de nuevo al bosque para devolver todo lo que Juan de Hierro le había ofrecido, quería su caballo cojo de vuelta. Y así, después de algunas pruebas más que tuvo que pasar, el rey descubrió que él era un héroe y al final le concedió la mano de su hija, y Juan de Hierro le ofreció riquezas a cambio de haberlo liberado de la prisión en la que estaba previamente.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
What I like most about this story is that the young prince undergoes a great change, but it is not a sudden and implausible change as in most fairy tales. Despite the magical realism that characterizes fairy tales in general, the Brothers Grimm resort to events that are closer to reality. that is, the prince who is the protagonist of this story undergoes a great evolution after going through several trials: having tried unsuccessfully to practice various trades, having fought in the war, having overcome the trials imposed by the king (which were several, but I did not go into detail so as not to extend the post even further). In this way, the character gained even more maturity and life experience, going from being an arrogant and haughty young man to a brave one who knows how hard it is to earn a place in the world, but all this under the mentorship of John of Iron, who played a very important role in his life. On the other hand, the spring also acts as a cautionary element that teaches him that every action has consequences and that some of those consequences are irreversible.
Lo que más me gusta de esta historia es que el joven príncipe experimenta un gran cambio, pero no es un cambio repentino e inverosímil como en la mayoría de los cuentos de hadas, a pesar del realismo mágico que caracteriza a los cuentos por lo general, los hermanos Grimm recurren a hechos que se ajustan más a la realidad, es decir, el principe protagonista de esta historia, experimenta una gran evolución luego de haber pasado por varias pruebas: haber intentado ejercer sin éxito varios oficios, haber luchado en la guerra, haber superado las pruebas impuestas por el rey (que fueron varias pero no entré en detalle para no extender aún más el post) de esta manera el personaje ganó aún más madurez y experiencia de vida, pasó de ser un joven arrogante y soberbio, a uno valiente, que sabe cuanto cuesta ganarse un puesto en el mundo, pero todo esto bajo la mentoría de Juan de Hierro, quién jugó un papel importantísimo en su vida. Por otra parte el manantial también actúa como un elemento aleccionador que le enseña que todo acto tiene consecuencias y que algunas de esas consecuencias son irreversibles
And just like in most of the Grimm brothers' stories, in this one we find the search for identity as an important factor, as a source of motivation for the main character. The prince must prove to himself that he can stand on his own two feet, that he can live as a farmhand or a peasant, that he does not need the influence of his true identity. But something else that really stands out in this story is the character of Iron John. He is not just any character; there is a duality in him that is worth analyzing. For me, he symbolizes the primitive strength of man, his survival instinct, but at the same time he also represents wisdom, and if we analyze it more deeply, we will realize that human beings need all of this and must combine it to maintain a healthy balance in their lives.
Y tal como en la mayoría de los cuentos de los hermanos Grimm, en este encontramos la búsqueda de la identidad como factor importante, como fuente de motivación para el personaje principal, el príncipe debe demostrarse a si mismo que puede andar por su cuenta, que puede vivir como mozo o campesino, que no necesita de la influencia de su verdadera identidad. Pero algo que también llama poderosamente la atención en este relato, es la figura de Juan de Hierro, él no es un personaje cualquiera, hay una dualidad en él digna de analizar. Para mí el simboliza la fuerza primitiva del hombre, su instinto de supervivencia, pero al mismo tiempo también representa la sabiduría, y si nos ponemos a analizar con más profundidad, nos daremos cuenta que el ser humano necesita de todo esto y combinarlo para mantener un sano equilibrio en su vida.
Furthermore, one of the greatest lessons this beautiful story teaches us is that true value is not immediately apparent; it remains hidden inside (like the prince's golden hair). So it's a wonderful story to sit down and read and analyze in depth with children. What's more, it's not scandalous and doesn't have any scenes that could be difficult to digest, unlike some of the Brothers Grimm stories. Iron John is a story about overcoming obstacles, change, strength, courage, and humility, so I highly recommend it 😊.
Además, una de las mayores enseñanzas que tiene esta preciosa historia, es que el verdadero valor no salta a la vista, permanece oculto en el interior (como los cabellos de oro del príncipe) Así que es una maravillosa historia para sentarse a leer y analizar a profundidad con los niños, además esta no es escabrosa ni tiene escenas que pudieran resultar muy difíciles de digerir, como lo son algunas de las historias de los Hermanos Grimm, Juan de Hierro es una historia sobre superación, cambios, fuerza, coraje y también humildad, así que la recomiendo totalmente 😊.
