Today I have prepared a selection of horror books that, if you like this genre as much as I do, you will probably enjoy very much. However, I am not going to resort to the classics. You will probably find books on this list that you have not heard of before, or maybe you have, I don't know, but I will give you a short review along with my own opinion of each one.

This book is not a horror classic, but it should be. It was written by Andrea Perron, one of the daughters of the Perron family (does that name sound familiar?), the family on which the movie The Conjuring was based. In this book, Andre recounts her own experience living in that haunted house. Some of her experiences coincide with what we saw in the movie, but others were different, and I dare say they were even more terrifying. In fact, one of the things that gave me the most chills when reading this book was the description of Batsheda Sherman (the witch who stalked the family), because if you thought she was horrible in the movie version, she was even more so in the book. She was tall, with wild hair, and her face resembled a beehive. How terrifying! 😱 Furthermore, as the book is narrated from the point of view of someone who experienced all this firsthand, the reading experience is much more immersive, thus generating authentic terror.

This book is by Jay Anson and is based on the experiences of the Lutz family, who claimed to have lived in the house where everything happened. 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville is the exact address of a beautiful property that the Lutz family purchased in the 1970s. Despite being very beautiful and large, practically a mansion, they acquired it at a very low cost, as a terrible murder had previously taken place there. The father of the family did not give much importance to the matter, but some time later, inexplicable and terrifying events began to occur. One of the things that horrified me the most when I read it was the appearance of Jody, a demonic pig that appeared to the youngest daughter of the family, but there were all kinds of disturbing presences in that house, such as a sweet smell in the kitchen that preceded an unexpected hug that Kathleen Lutz (the mother of the family) received, an invisible hug. On the other hand, the father always woke up at the same time (three in the morning) and always felt unbearably cold.

One of the most shocking scenes in this book was when the family fled on December 28 in the 1970s, when they could no longer bear it and ran away in terror. It was as if all the entities had decided to attack together (poltergeist ghosts and demons). There was a lot of tension, and the narrative is incredibly absorbing. It's almost as if you were experiencing the events yourself. I couldn't stop reading, and even as I read, I found myself saying to myself, “Run, run!” Hahaha, it really scared me.

This book was a pleasant discovery for me. I found it by chance on a shelf in my house 😃, and although I read it with some skepticism at first because it is an old book (from the 1950s or so) and I didn't know how well it would handle horror, I was pleasantly surprised twice: the first was that this book was the basis for the well-known Will Smith movie of the same name, and the other surprise was that the book really does handle horror excellently, as it even has a futuristic approach while maintaining the most terrifying essence of classic vampires (the creatures that are the protagonists of this literary marvel of horror).

The book is narrated in the first person and takes place almost entirely in a single setting, the home of Neville (the protagonist), except for the occasions when he leaves his home. It is also written in monologues, taking into account that he is completely alone. but the reading is very dynamic because the reader is constantly on alert, knowing that all the action takes place at night, when the vampires come out of hiding and invite Neville to come out so they can devour him, while he tries to ignore their provocations. On the other hand, we see his attempts to find a logical explanation for the whole situation, and although it seems that everything was the result of something organic or scientific, and that the creatures behave like zombies, they all retain the same classic essence that has characterized them for years, such as their fear of garlic and sunlight. The ending is a little disappointing for my taste, but it is compensated for by the plot throughout the novel, the protagonist's efforts to discover what is happening, the memories he has that help shape the story, and his subsequent encounter with other humans.

All these books help create a terrifying and immersive atmosphere that makes the reader feel part of the story. The descriptions of each place and situation, the attitude or reaction of the characters, everything makes it interesting, which is precisely why I wanted to recommend them to you. Hoy tengo preparada una selección de libros de horror que seguramente, si te gusta tanto este género como a mi, probablemente los disfrutarás muchísimo, eso sí, no voy a recurrir a los clásicos, probablemente en esta lista vas a conseguir libros de los que no hayas oído antes, o quizá sí, no lo sé, pero te daré una pequeña reseña junto con mi propia opinión de cada uno de ellos

Este libro no es un clásico de horror pero debería serlo, fue escrito por Andrea Perron, quién es una de las hijas de la familia Perron (¿les parece conocido este apellido?) es la familia en la que se basaron para hacer la película El Conjuro. En este libro Andre cuenta su propia experiencia viviendo dentro de esa casa embrujada, algunas de sus experiencias coinciden con las que pudimos ver en la película, pero otras fueron diferentes y puedo atreverme a decir que fueron más aterradoras. De hecho una de las cosas que me dio más escalofríos al leer este libro fue la descripción de Batsheda Sherman (la bruja que asechaba a la familia), porque si en la versión cinematográfica te pareció horrible, la literaria lo fue aún más, era alta, con el cabello alborotado y su cara se asemejaba a un panal de abejas ¡Qué pánico! 😱 además, al estar el libro narrado desde el punto de vista de alguien que vivió todo eso en carne propia, la experiencia de lectura es mucho más inmersiva, por lo tanto se genera un terror auténtico.

Este libro es de Jay Anson, y está basado en las experiencias vividas por los Lutz, quienes aseguraron haber vivido en esa casa donde todo ocurrió. El número 112 de Ocean Avenue en Amityville es la dirección exacta de una hermosísima propiedad que la familia Lutz adquirió en los años 70. A pesar de ser muy bella y grande, prácticamente una mansión, la adquirieron a muy bajo costo, ya que anteriormente hubo un terrible asesinato allí. El padre de la familia no le dio importancia al asunto pero tiempo después comenzaron a ocurrir hechos inexplicables y aterradores. Una de las cosas que más me horrorizó cuando la leí fue la aparición de Jodi, un cerdo demoniaco que se le aparecía a la hija menor de la familia, pero en esa casa había todo tipo de presencias inquietantes, como un olor dulzaino en la cocina que antecedía a un inesperado abrazo que recibía Kathleen Lutz (la madre de la familia) un abrazo invisible, por otra parte el padre siempre se despertaba a la misma hora (las tres de la mañana) y siempre tenía un frío insoportable.

Una de las escenas más impactantes de este libro fue el momento de la huida de la familia, un 28 de diciembre de los 70, cuando ya no pudieron soportar más y salieron despavoridos, fue como si todas las entidades decidieran atacar juntas (fantasmas polstergaist y demonios) hubo mucha tensión y la narración es increíblemente absorbente, es casi como si estuvieses viviendo los hechos, yo no podía parar de leer e incluso mientras leía me decía a mi misma ¡corran, corran, jajaja de verdad me dio mucho miedo.

Este libro fue un grato descubrimiento para mi, lo encontré por casualidad en un estante en mi casa 😃, y a pesar de que lo leí con recelo al inicio porque al ser un libro antiguo (de los años 50 más o menos) no sabía como seria el manejo del terror, pero me llevé dos gratas sorpresas: la primera fue que este libro fue en el que se basaron para hacer la conocida película de Will Smith del mismo nombre, y la otra sorpresa fue que de verdad el libro tiene un excelente manejo del terror ya que tiene incluso un enfoque futurista pero manteniendo la esencia más terrorífica de los vampiros clásicos (las criaturas protagonistas de esta maravilla literaria del terror)

El libro está narrado en primera persona y prácticamente ocurre en un solo escenario, la casa de Neville (el protagonista) a excepción de las ocasiones en que sale de su hogar, además se maneja en monólogos, tomando en cuenta que él está completamente solo, pero la lectura es muy dinámica porque constantemente el lector está en alerta al saber que por las noches ocurre toda la acción, los vampiros salen de su escondrijo e invitan a Neville a salir para poder devorarlo, mientras él intenta ignorar sus provocaciones. Por otra parte vemos sus intentos de buscar una explicación lógica a toda esa situación, y aunque parece que todo fue producto de algo orgánico o científico, y que las criaturas presentan un comportamiento parecido a los zombies, todos ellos conservan la misma esencia clásica que los ha caracterizado por años, como el temor al ajo y la luz solar. El final es un poco decepcionante para mi gusto pero lo compensa la trama a lo largo de toda la novela, los esfuerzos del protagonista por descubrir lo que sucede, los recuerdos que tiene y que ayudan a dar forma a la historia, y su posterior encuentro con otros humanos,

Todos estos libros ayudan a crear una atmósfera terrorífica e inmersiva que hace que el lector se sienta parte de la historia, las descripciones de cada lugar y situación, la actitud o reacción de los personajes, todo hace que sea interesante, así que por eso precisamente quise recomendárselos.
