A while ago, while cleaning my room, I found more copies of the books that were part of a pack that the Venezuelan Ministry of Culture and Education had distributed for free to schools and libraries. They were copies of famous works and classics of world literature. They weren't printed on the best quality paper; in fact, it looked like newsprint, but that's not really relevant. What matters is the content and the fact that it was distributed for free. At that time, I hadn't had the chance to read them all thoroughly. I kept some in my library, so I had easy access to them and read them many times, but others that didn't fit ended up in drawers or boxes. So, while cleaning my room, I found this gem titled: "Exemplary Novels."

Hace un tiempo mientras limpiaba mi habitación conseguí más ejemplares de los libros que formaban parte de un pack que algún tiempo distribuyó de forma gratuita en escuelas y bibliotecas el ministerio de Cultura y Educación de Venezuela, se trataba de ejemplares de obras famosas y clásicos de la literatura del mundo entero. No estaban impresos en el papel de la mejor calidad, de hecho parecía papel de periódico, pero realmente eso no es relevante para nada, lo importante es el contenido y el hecho de que era distribuido de forma gratuita. En esa época yo no había tenido la oportunidad de leerlos todos de forma diligente, algunos los conservaba en mi biblioteca, así que tuve acceso fácil a ellos y los leí muchas veces, pero otros que no me cabían en ese espacio terminaron en gaveteros o cajas, así que mientras limpiaba mi habitación encontré esta joya titulada: "Novelas Ejemplares"

The author's name is very well-known, even to those who aren't Spanish speakers, right? He's the one who wrote the famous novel "Don Quixote de la Mancha," but the book I'm reviewing today isn't a single novel, but rather twelve short stories that the author wrote between 1590 and 1612, originally known as Exemplary Novels of Most Honest Entertainment. Because they were written several centuries ago, like Don Quixote, the narrative is vastly different from modern fiction. In fact, the Spanish in which it's written is Old Spanish, which has some words more similar to Portuguese, and in this sense, as well as the author's style, it might be a bit tedious for some readers. That's why I don't consider it a book for everyone.

El nombre del autor es muy conocido, incluso por aquellos que no son hispanoparlantes ¿no? pues fue él quién escribió la célebre novela "Don Quijote de la Mancha", pero este libro que estoy reseñando hoy no se trata de una sola novela, sino de doce relatos cortos que el autor escribió entre 1590 y 1612, y originalmente eran conocidos como Novelas Ejemplares de Honestísimo Entretenimiento. Debido a que fueron escritos hace varios siglos, al igual que El Quijote, la narrativa es abismalmente muy distinta a la narrativa moderna, de hecho el español en que está escrito es español antiguo, que tiene algunas palabras más parecidas al portugués, y en este sentido al igual que el estilo del autor podría resultarles un poco tedioso a algunos lectores, por eso no considero que sea una lectura para todo el mundo.

In my copy, I like it because it has some illustrations that resemble Baroque or Renaissance paintings, which help provide greater context for the stories; they stimulate your imagination. The tales also offer a political, historical, and social context from several centuries ago, highlighting hypocrisy, morality, honor, and freedom, which is quite interesting. But the best part lies in its characters, who are very complex in their emotions. As an iconic and distinctive hallmark, just as he did in Don Quixote, Cervantes also uses satire and irony to invite the reader to reflect on the important themes I've already mentioned.

En el caso de mi ejemplar me gusta porque tiene algunas ilustraciones que parecen pinturas barrocas o renacentistas, y que ayudan a tener un mayor contexto de las historias, digamos que fomentan tu imaginación. Los relatos además nos dan un contexto político, histórico y social de hace varios siglos, en los cuales destacan la hipocresía, la moralidad, el honor y la libertad, lo cuál resulta bastante interesante, pero lo mejor de todo radica en sus personajes, los cuales son muy complejos en sus emociones. Como sello icónico y distintivo, al igual que lo hizo en Don Quijote, Cervantes además recurre a la sátira y la ironía para invitar al lector a reflexionar sobre los temas importantes que ya mencioné.

Of all his stories, my favorite is "La Gitanilla," which tells the love story between a nobleman, Don Juan de Cárcamo, and the protagonist, a Gypsy girl named Preciosa, who lives up to her name. I find this novel interesting because it brings up complex and important themes that, despite the passage of time, unfortunately remain relevant, such as social inequality, classism, racism, and hypocrisy. We see that even then, Gypsies were a tribe looked down upon by the "Payos" (non-Gypsies), and in fact, we can still see how they continue to be victims of prejudice in parts of Andalusia. But what I love about Cervantes is his skill in weaving the story together; this one also has a wonderful plot twist 😲 😃 that allows the protagonists to have a well-deserved and satisfying happy ending.

Entre todos mi relato favorito es La Gitanilla, que trata sobre el amor entre un noble, don Juan de Cárcamo y la protagonista de esta historia, una gitana llamada Preciosa que le hace honor a su nombre. Esta novela me parece interesante porque saca a relucir temas complejos e importantes que a pesar del paso de los años siguen, lamentablemente vigentes, como lo es la desigualdad social, el clasismo, el racismo y la hipocresía, vemos que ya entonces los gitanos eran una tribu menospreciada por los "Payos" (no gitanos) y de hecho hoy en día todavía podemos ver en zonas de Andalucía como ellos siguen siendo víctimas de prejuicios. Pero lo que me encanta de Cervantes es su habilidad para ir acomodando la historia, esta además tiene un giro de trama maravilloso 😲 😃 que permite que los protagonistas tengan un merecido y satisfactorio final feliz.
