This is one of the lesser-known tales by the Brothers Grimm, but I like it a lot because it teaches us about tenacity and justice. This story has two versions (the least known to me), and in these versions the characters change. In one version, the maiden is enslaved by her stepmother, and the one who helps her with her chores is a kind old sorceress. In the other version, the one who enslaves her is a troll, and the one who helps her is a beautiful white lion.
Este es de los menos conocidos cuentos de los hermanos Grimm pero me gusta mucho porque es de esos que nos dan ejemplo de tenacidad y justicia. Este cuento tiene dos versiones (las menos las que yo conozco) en estas los personajes cambian, en una versión la doncella es esclavizada por su madrastra y quién la ayuda en sus labores es una anciana hechicera bondadosa, y en la otra versión quién la esclaviza es un Troll, y quién la ayuda es un hermoso león blanco
Overview/Resumen
Anja was a maiden who lived under the thumb of a troll, forced to work hard and constantly burdened with tasks. On one occasion, he ordered her to gather several pounds of feathers overnight, an impossible amount in such a short time, threatening to beat her if she failed. Upon hearing this, the maiden began to weep, but White Lion came to her rescue, collecting all the feathers. However, the troll thought he could offer even more work, and this time he ordered the maiden to empty the pond with a slotted spoon, but White Lion again came to her aid. The third time, the troll ordered Anja to build a magnificent castle. White Lion built it in Anja's place, and when the troll went to inspect the work, he accidentally fell into the cellar and died. Thus, the maiden was left alone in the castle, surrounded by gold and elegant dresses, and she had no shortage of suitors.
Anja era una doncella que era obligada por un Troll a trabajar duramente, siempre estaba cargándola de trabajo. En una ocasión le ordenó recoger varias libras de plumas durante la noche, una cantidad imposible para tan poco tiempo, y si no lo hacía le daría una paliza. Al saber esto la doncella se puso a llorar pero león blanco acudió a su rescate, recogiendo todas las plumas, sin embargo ele troll pensó que podría ofrecer aún más trabajo y en esta ocasión le ordenó a la doncella vaciar el estanque con una cuchara agujereada, pero león blanco volvió a socorrerla. A la tercera ocasión el troll le ordenó a Anja construir un fastuoso castillo, león blanco lo construyó en lugar de Anja y cuando el troll fue a inspeccionar la obra, cayó por accidente en el sótano y murió, de esta manera la doncella se quedó sola en el castillo, llena de oro y vestidos elegantes, así que no le faltaron pretendientes.
And so it was that the king's son, who had heard of her beauty and wealth, came to court her, and she fell completely in love with him. But one day he had to run an errand and promised the maiden he would return. She kissed him on the cheek and asked for his fidelity, that he never let anyone else kiss him there. But the young man did not return on time, for the troll's daughter had kissed him, making him forget Anja. So Anja packed three dresses: one embroidered with stars, another with moons, and the third with suns, and set off to find her betrothed. When she couldn't find him, she buried the dresses in a chest with money and began working as a shepherdess. But after two years, while tending her flock, she saw her fiancé passing by on his way to the city. He was going to his wedding, his wedding to the king's daughter, and the maiden felt the pain of betrayal in her heart.
Fue así como el hijo del rey que había escuchado de su belleza y riqueza fue a cortejarla y ella quedó completamente enamorada de él, pero en una ocasión él tuvo que ir a hacer un encargo y le prometió a la doncella que regresaría, ella lo besó en la mejilla y le pidió fidelidad, que no permitiera que nadie más lo besara en esa mejilla, pero el muchacho no regresó en el tiempo acordado, ya que lo había besado la hija del troll, haciéndolo olvidar a Anja. De esta manera Anja empacó tres vestidos: uno con estrellas bordadas, otro con lunas y el tercero con soles y se marchó a buscar a su prometido, pero al no poder hallarlo enterró los vestidos dentro de un arca con dinero y comenzó a trabajar como pastora de ovejas, pero luego de dos años, mientras ella arreaba su rebaño, vio pasar a su novio camino a la ciudad, iba a su boda, la boda con la hija del rey, así que la doncella sintió el dolor de la traición en su corazón.
When the king held a three-day ball at the palace, to which the entire country was invited, the maiden saw her opportunity. She donned her dress embroidered with suns, adorned herself beautifully, and attended the ball. The prince was captivated by her beauty and danced with her all night. But then she slipped away into the crowd, disappeared from sight, and returned to her sheepfold. The following night, she wore a crescent moon headdress and danced with the prince again, this time all night long. On the third night, the maiden wore her star-studded gown. The prince asked her who she was, and in reply, she kissed him on the cheek. Then, at that moment, he finally remembered her, for the troll's daughter's spell was broken. So they married and lived happily ever after.
Cuando el rey ofreció un baile que duraría tres días en el palacio al que estaba invitado todo el país, la doncella vio su oportunidad, se puso el vestido de soles bordados, se adornó hermosamente y acudió al baile. El príncipe estaba encantado con su belleza y bailó con ella toda la noche, pero ella se escabulló luego entre la multitud, se perdió de vista y regresó a pastorear ovejas, la noche siguiente usó un tocado de media luna en el pelo y volvió a bailar con el príncipe toda la noche. La tercera noche la doncella lució su traje de estrellas. El príncipe le preguntó quién era, y ella por toda respuesta le dio un beso en la mejilla, entonces en ese momento él finalmente pudo recordarla porque el hechizo de la hija del troll se rompió, así que se casaron y fueron felices para siempre.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
The main theme of this story is kindness rewarded. From the beginning, Anja had good intentions; she worked hard to please the Troll. But he insisted on giving her increasingly difficult and heavy tasks that she could hardly perform. However, because her soul was kind, she was rewarded by the white lion, completing all the tasks assigned by the Troll and finally being freed from him. In this way, we can see that good deeds are rewarded sooner or later, and bad deeds are punished.
El tema principal de este cuento es la bondad recompensada, desde un inicio Anja tenía buenas intenciones, ella trabajaba arduamente para complacer al Troll, pero él insistía en darle trabajos cada vez más arduos y pesados que ella difícilmente podría ejecutar, pero debido a que su alma era bondadosa, fue recompensada por el león blanco, cumpliendo todas las tareas encomendadas pro el Troll y finalmente librándola de él. De este modo podemos ver que las acciones que haces tarde o temprano son recompensadas y als malas castigadas.
But even though the lion helped Anja in all her tasks, we see that she has always been characterized by perseverance; she never gave up and fought for true love, leaving her castle and fortune behind to go and find it. So this proves that she put the value of her sincere feelings above the superficiality and frivolity of riches.
Pero a pesar de que el león ayudaba a Anja en todas sus labores, vemos que a ella siempre la ha caracterizado la constancia, nunca se dejó vencer y luchó por el amor verdadero, dejando su castillo y fortuna detrás para irse a buscarlo, así que esto prueba que ella antepuso el valor de sus sentimientos sinceros por encima de la superficialidad y frivolidad de las riquezas.
Perhaps the troll's inhuman cruelty was a solution. Anja, seeing that the tasks were becoming increasingly arduous and the threats more certain, was nevertheless rekindled by the lion's magic and kindness, which restored her faith and hope. This is what later motivated her not to give up and to fight against adversity, not to accept her fiancé's apparent abandonment as certain, but instead to investigate his whereabouts and find him.
Puede ser que la crueldad inhumana del troll una solución. a Anja, al ver que los trabajos eran cada vez más pesados y las amenazas más certeras, sin embargo la magia y bondad del león le devolvieron la fe y las esperanzas, fue esto lo que la motivó más adelante a no rendirse y luchar contra la adversidad, a no tomar por certeza el aparente abandono de su prometido, si no que se dedicó a investigar su paradero y encontrar
It is a story that emphasizes perseverance and female empowerment, because although Anja initially needed to be rescued by the white lion, she was the one who worked constantly to win back her lost love; she was the one who broke the spell of the troll's daughter and rescued the prince from his slavery.
Es un cuento que enfatiza la perseverancia y el empoderamiento femenino, porque a pesar de que en un inicio Anja necesitó ser rescatada por el león blanco, posteriormente fue ella quién trabajó constantemente por recuperar a su amor perdido, fue ella quien rompió el hechizo de la hija del troll y rescató al príncipe de su esclavitud.
These tales can be quite dark in their original Grimm Brothers versions, but they undoubtedly emphasize many values that are fundamental to life and humanity, which is why I like them so much. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did 😊. See you next time with another review. Have a wonderful weekend!
