[Book Review] Christine ESP/ENG

Some time ago I was helping one of my aunts to tidy up a house she was going to sell, and in the process we took out some old, tattered and musty books. She told me I could take the ones I wanted, so I chose the ones that caught my attention, but among those was one that as soon as I read the name of the author I screamed with joy, since he is considered one of the fathers of my favorite genre, horror, I'm referring of course to Stephen King 😍 so get ready to discover what this work called Christine is about and what is my opinion about it.
Hace un tiempo estuve ayudando a una de mis tías a poner en orden una casa que iba a vender, y en el proceso sacamos algunos libros viejos, raídos y mohosos. Ella me dijo que podía tomar los que quisiera, así que elegí los que más llamaban mi atención, pero entre esos estaba uno que con nada más leer el nombre del autor di un grito de alegría, ya que es considerado uno de los padres de mi género favorito, el terror, me refiero desde luego a Stephen King 😍 así que prepárense para descubrir de que se trata esta obra llamada Christine y cuál es mi opinión al respecto.
Overview/Resumen
Arnie Cunningham is a shy and withdrawn boy who lives in a suburb of Pittsburgh, he has no success with women and very few friends, but at some point he finds something that lifts his spirits a little, an old 1958 Plymouth Fury car that its former owner affectionately called "Christine" 😄 (something that reminds me of myself because in my family we always liked to name the vehicles, my dad's car is called "Renegade" and my sister's motorcycle bike "Elizabeth") The car was at a very low price (only $250), even taking into account the repairs that had to be done to keep it in top condition, and this was something that certainly made Arnie happy because with the money he had he could have a wonderful car at a good price. Everything was going well at the beginning but over time, as he made repairs to Christine, Arnie's attitude began to change, in fact he changed so much that he became totally unrecognizable, now he was angry, violent, rude and nasty, to the point of alienating his family and the few friends he had, in fact he did not even want to listen to his best friend, Dennis Guilder when he tried to warn him about it.
Arnie Cunningham es un muchacho tímido y retraído que vive en un suburbio de Pittsburgh, no tiene éxito con las mujeres y tiene muy pocos amigos, pero en algún momento encuentra algo que le eleva un poco el animo, un viejo auto Plymouth Fury del año 1958 al que su antiguo dueño llamaba cariñosamente "Christine" 😄 (algo que me recuerda a mi misma porque en mi familia siempre hemos estilado ponerle nombre a los vehículos, el auto de mi papá se llama "Renegado" y la bici moto de mi hermana "Elizabeth") El auto estaba a muy bajo precio (solo 250 $), incluso tomando en cuenta las reparaciones que había que hacerle para que estuviera en óptimas condiciones, y esto fue algo que desde luego alegró a Arnie porque con el dinero que tenía podía tener un auto maravilloso a un buen precio. Todo iba bien al inicio pero con el tiempo, a medida que él le hacía reparaciones a Christine, la actitud de Arnie comenzó a cambiar, de hecho cambió tanto que se volvió totalmente irreconocible, ahora era iracundo, violento, grosero y desagradable, hasta el punto de alejar a su familia y los pocos amigos que tenía, de hecho ni siquiera quiso escuchar a su mejor amigo, Dennis Guilder cuando intentó advertirlo al respecto.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
As a reader it is frustrating to see that Arnie little by little is heading towards his own destruction because of Christine, he creates such a solid and destructive bond with the car that he is not able to listen to anyone else, which makes me suppose that Stephen King's objective is to show us what obsessions can cause in people, they leave you completely vulnerable and isolated, even though they give you a false sense of security. Arnie believed that Christine was the solution to his problems, that she made him look cool, he believed he was indestructible, but ironically it was that same connection that ended up destroying him, and in turn I think the author used the car as a metaphor for the self-destruction that resides in all human beings, without exception, we all have the ability to ruin everything if we let ourselves be carried away by self-destructive thoughts (lack of confidence in yourself, anger, envy etc).
Como lector resulta frustrante ver que Arnie poco a poco se dirige hacia su propia destrucción por causa de Christine, crea un vínculo tan sólido y destructivo con el auto que no es capaz de escuchar a nadie más, lo cuál me hace suponer que el objetivo de Stephen King es mostrarnos lo que las obsesiones pueden causar en las personas, estas te dejan completamente vulnerable y aislado, aunque te den una falsa sensación de seguridad. Arnie creía que Christine era la solución a sus problemas, que lo hacía ver cool, se creía indestructible, pero irónicamente fue esa misma conexión la que terminó destruyéndolo, y a su vez creo que el autor usó el auto como una metáfora de lo que es la autodestrucción que reside en todos los seres humanos, sin excepciones, todos tenemos la capacidad de arruinarlo todo si nos dejamos llevar por pensamientos autodestructivos (falta de confianza en ti mismo, ira, envidia etc)
If you have already read Stephen King you will know that his pace is usually slow, but by the second part of the book (narrated in third person) it becomes more dynamic. I consider Christine to be one of the most terrifying antagonists I have ever read, not because she shows a terrifying face but because of her capacity for destruction disguised as "help" because that is precisely where the problem lies, that apparently Arnie has improved, he has gained security and physically he has also changed showing a neater image, but in reality he was suffering a terrible involution.
Si ya has leído a Sthephen King ya sabrás que su ritmo usualmente es lento, sin embargo ya para la segunda parte del libro (narrada en tercera persona) se va volviendo más dinámica. Considero que Christine es uno de los antagonistas más aterradores de los que he leído, no porque muestre una cara aterradora sino por su capacidad de destrucción disfrazada de "ayuda" porque es precisamente allí donde radica el problema, que aparentemente Arnie ha mejorado, ha ganado seguridad y físicamente también ha cambiado mostrando una imagen más prolija, pero en realidad estaba sufriendo una terrible involución.
Due to its slow pace and the complexity of certain parts of the reading I do not consider it a Stephen King book with which you should start reading his works, for that I would recommend more It or Pet Cemetery, but if you already have some experience reading it really feel very curious about this story, I totally recommend it, it is fascinating.
Debido a su ritmo lento y a la complejidad de ciertas parte de la lectura no considero que se un libro de Stephen King con el que debas empezar a leer sus obras, para eso recomendaría más It o Cementerio de Mascotas, pero si ya tienes algo de experiencia leyéndolo de verdad sientes mucha curiosidad por esta historia, tela recomiendo totalmente, es fascinante.

Reading the review made me feel like I had just read the book myself. In fact, I couldn't help but admire your wonderful way of explaining things.
I loved your review, especially your reflection on how the car is a metaphor for self-destruction. Honestly, it's scarier to think about how an obsession can completely change you than any monster with claws. Thanks for the warning that it's slow! I'll keep that in mind when I get around to it.
