What Is GHAWG?

#GHAWG is short for "God's Hog: A Watchful Guardian." This fictional story tells how David Guardia, a courier and business owner from Bayonne, New Jersey, US moved into the next phase of his life after spending the final ten years of his ailing father's life helping him.

More details can be found in the first post of this weekly recap.

Today we ride 160 miles from Lebanon to St. Louis. It longer than our recent usual rides, but tomorrow we enter Illinois. Just as important, it's where we find overnight lodging. Along the way there are a few interesting places.
🏍️ Since Felix Legion assumed its identity in New Mexico, the daily distance traveled has averaged at least 120 miles. 160 miles is a much longer distance for Felix Legion to ride, but in exchange for this longer ride is an overnight stay in the major league city of St. Louis, Missouri, US and a chance to begin the ride by crossing the Mississippi River into the state of Illinois. This would turn out to be an important decision.

Between Lebanon and Waynesville are these places scattered along 30 miles of Interstate-44/US Bicycle Route 66: Sleeper, Hazelgreen, Gascozark, Laquey, and Buckhorn. Before reaching Waynesville, we pass by a 12-screen ciniplex.
🏍️ This travel entry lists a few colorful place names. The ciniplex was included as a point of reference and as a reminder that the rest of the ride along Old Route 66 would be within populated areas (suburbs or cities).

We rode past Waynesville & St. Robert before we find a couple of locations: Uranus, & Devil's Elbow.

"It could be worse," Lionel told everyone else. "We'd be riding through The Devil's Anus." Everyone else groaned at that joke.
🏍️ In the context of Old Route 66, Uranus is not a town; instead, it is a destination for tourists. Think of it as a monument memorializing a location. Meanwhile, the Devil's Elbow is a real town. What's amazing is that these 2 places are a short distance from each other, just a few minutes by motorcycle or automobile.

🏍️ For anyone who has seen Thor: Ragnarok (the 3rd Thor movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe), the only way off Sakar (known to comics readers as "Planet Hulk") was to travel through the wormhole which brought Hulked-out Dr. Bruce Banner to Sakar in the first place. This wormhole is named "The Devil's Anus," and Sakar is at the business end of this wormhole. Even without knowing anything about the MCU or the comics, the joke was also simply TMI ("too much information").

On deck was Rolla, but we had to ride around 20 miles past a few other places first: Powellville, Arlington (and Jerome), and the Old Route 66 RV Park at Doolittle. Roughly 50 miles into the ride we topped up our tanks and ate.
🏍️ This was a pure travel entry. It shows Felix Legion getting closer to St. Louis.

5️⃣4️⃣5️⃣ 2024-August-15 11:37:57

As we rode east toward Cuba along Old Route 66, we encountered a group of Baby Boomers as they motored west. We each gave the Boomers a thumbs up on their rides: Harley-Davidson, Indian, Honda, Ducati, Yamaha, Triumph, and BMW.
🏍️ This zapfic entry is a callback going all the way back to when David Guardia was riding with the uncanny Manny Rey as his co-pilot. Various riders passed these two guys back then, but both David and Manny Rey showed respect to fellow members of the brotherhood of motorcycle riders.

5️⃣4️⃣6️⃣ 2024-August-16 20:38:36

Once in Cuba, we took a break to explore this city of 3,500 people. According to info Lindsay found, Cuba was designated "Route 66 Mural City" by the Missouri Legislature in 2002.

"Now I don't have to hijack a plane," I said.
🏍️ This is the first time Felix Legion encounters a place named Cuba which is not is island nation 90 miles from the Florida Keys in the Caribbean Sea. Numerous other places in the United States bear this name. During the 1970s there was a rash of airplane hijackings. For most of these hijackings, one of the demands of the hijackers was a fully-fueled plan whose final destination was Cuba. At the time, Cuba was ruled by Fidel Castro.

After everyone else shook their head at my joke, we took time to see at these murals and photograph them in various ways. Some photos would be purely personal. Others would be used for secondary purposes some time in the future.
🏍️ As noted in the previous zapfic entry, which itself ties into a detail at the Route 66 Road Trip web site, the town of Cuba in Missouri is known as "Route 66 Mural City." This gives everyone in Felix Legion another opportunity to play tourist as they ride east toward Chicago and the eastern terminus of what used to be Route 66.

Story Arc So Far

Felix Legion continues its ride east along Old Route 66. At this point, Felix Legion is in Missouri riding from Lebanon to the major league city of St. Louis. Across the Mississippi River from St. Louis is the state of Illinois, the 8th state (going east) containing Old Route 66. Aside from a couple of cringe-worthy jokes, most zapfic entries were travel entries.
