Universities and AI

Students are starting to use AI tools like ChatGPT to cheat in school, why am I not surprised. For most people it ain't really about doing bad, they just want things easier, it's the nature of most people. It's a only a few that will willingly ignore an easier route and take the hard way just because it's the right thing to do.

But regardless, cheating will chatgpt for assignments and school activities is never good for learning. Some schools are doing too little to limit cheating and according to a teacher named Dr. Craig Reeves from Birkbeck, University of London, some educational institutions do not want to check for cheating at all. Why are they not even bothering. Well Dr Craig said the schools do not want to lose revenue, especially from students who pay a lot of money for tuition. Don't forget that in as much as school is for learning, it's still a business.

We are already aware of tools that can be used to detect whether writing is from AI. Tools like Turnitin, or Copy leaks or Originality and after researching, I found out not too long ago about gptZero, ZeroGpt, Scribbr.

Although Turnitin and other detectors can be limited in terms of how good they are with spotting an AI content, some schools do not want to use those tools because of their limitations. Yes, Turnitin works but they don't want to bother finding out whether it works or not.

If I owned a school, I probably would use the detectors but it may get to a point where the students are smart enough to break the system and make the whole exercise pointless.

The bad effect of this situation is that we're going to suddenly see a lot of super genius students on paper and super dumb in the real world. This might further drive the narrative of no degree or certificate required when applying for a job. Soon the big companies won't even consider your high grades because they know high grades doesn't necessarily reflect the true abilities of the person.

We might as well make AI fly the plane or treat a patient at the hospital because imagine someone performing a surgical operation and they used chatgpt to get the certificate. Well there's a bright side to it if you ask me.

If a Doctor used chatgpt to get grades and can use chatgpt to perform a successful operation than it's ok right?
