Don’t Quit Math and Science Too Early
Whenever I think back to my school days, I think of how I gave up easily on things like math and science when they were tough. A number of children experience the same thing. But I read an article by Judy Marks, the CEO of Otis, an elevator company, what she said changed my view completely.
This is Judy Marks and she's such an influencial person
She talked about why it is important not to give up on math and science too early. Not studying math and science for long enough can make you miss out on many career options. It seems natural too, when you think about it. Stopping to learn those topics too early means you could lose the opportunity to work in tech, engineering or help build big machines and today the world is leaning towards working with machines more than people.
She brought up the idea of women in careers dominated by men. She has worked in this type of field for more than 40 years. Although she thought it seemed like a place for men, she believes it’s fine to make it another option for women. She thinks that leadership, problem solving and success are all achievable by women. I agree with her and let me state the obvious, the main difference between men and women's are sexual organs and slight gene differences, that's not enough to stop a woman from doing what a man is capable of.
Angela Merkel believes you should be a good leader instead of thinking about being a woman leader or a man leader. I also think it’s the right way to think about them. For those who don't know who's Angela Merkel is, you could Google it but I'll share a video of here below.
She said companies should seek the best candidates without taking their gender into account. Why not use all the world’s talent? was her question. That question has remained in my mind. When young women have to leave science or tech too young or too early, a lot of skills and abilities they have are missed.
So if you ask me, I think we should make sure that we let every kid keep an open mind about math and science for as long as possible. Even when it’s getting more difficult, it may bring something wonderful as time goes on. It is also very important for companies to create more opportunities for women in these industries.
We won’t be able to build a good future if half the population is sidelined.
