The Cure to Feeling Dumber: Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI
While TBS (Turn Based Strategy) such as Sid Meier's Civilization VI is not really that popular these days, strategy games remain a game that I enjoy playing from time to time. When I was on linux, I got hooked on Wesnoth, a popular open source TBS game involving high fantasy. I spent hours on that game playing with my online friends and these days since switching to windows and having access to STEAM, I got the chance to play Sid Meier's Civilization VI. Typically this type of game requires you to think and what is intriguing about Civilization VI is that when playing single player I have not found any options to set the difficulty.
I got this game as a gift and these days it costs US$59,99 for the game. The game premise is that you start a civilization from the ground up. There are several civilizations but when you play single player it’s often randomized. Unlike many games I previously played, Civilization has the diplomacy options which includes making friends as well as waging a war with neighboring countries.
Another most impressive feature about the game is the interactive based diplomacy where what you said determines the course of the game. Sometimes you can be at war when you say the “wrong” thing to another country.
As you can see below is something I played today for only 57 turns. There are 500 turns in a single player and it can take hours to finally expand the empire and colonize other places. Today I got the chance to play as Tsar Peter from Russia.
While randomized, you can see some of the perks that you have by playing as a Russian Empire. During the first of the game, your settlements will look like a poor civilization, hut-like houses.
As you can see above, there are way too many icons that if you're a first time player it can feel a little overwhelming. But don't worry, there are encyclopedia that requires you to read and sometimes isn't helping at all 😂
Then, as you play the game, you start making allies or enemies with neighboring city states. There are some catch because you can also intentionally declare war. It's not recommend when you're starting out and has lower warriors ratio.
During the 50 turns, I managed to turn my hut into a proper russian empire. While it's not big empire yet the civilization has progressed.
Another part of the game that makes it fun is the fights between the warrior and the barbarians. Sometimes you can also fight enemies but so far, I only fought barbarians and kept my allies frenship strong.
After playing the game for about 30-45 minutes, it's already too much for the game. There are complex strategies that I have to do and time is also the enemy here. Each improvement is counted based on the turns. So, we have to really think to prioritize the needs of the empire. As you can see below this is the policy section that can only unlocked after a few turns from the "policy" tree. I haven't reached the point where I can decide the type of goverments I might have but the options are pretty interesting. Each of policy will also affect how the game runs and the resources that you might have.
There are a lot of nuances in the game that you have to learn. I only spend in total around 3 hours in the game and I can see myself hooked in this. Afterall, who wouldn't want to have an empire and feeling a lot smarter after playing this?

Some years ago I played Civ IV. Did you like that game?
I love it! I haven't explored every gameplay but it's pretty nice game so far. Are you not play it again these days?
No, today I don't have that much time for games, but perhaps I'll take a look at it. Thanks for writing about it.
Hi Mac! Good to see you here again. What a great game Civilization VI is, I can't explain you how I've played this game, so I'll leave you a screenshot of my hours on Steam 😂. Good Peter, an excellent character, I always chose the Vikings, they were my favorite civilization next to the Romans. Definitely what I like most about this game is its music, it's so... relaxing.
Sorry I just got back to you but I have 36 hours played by now haha and it's only been 11 days since I wrote about it. I don't use customized plans and play on random haha. I got to the point where I see helicopters and tanks but my eyes got extremely tired.
A Game like this, plague inc, but this looks Nice.
WHooot, love to play this again.
I spend weeks on Civ 2 many years ago....
Greetz and hope to see you soon
hahahaha me too! I am fairly addicted to it by now. I didn't know they even have aircraft too! hope to see you again soon.
