One Piece Live Action (2023) & A Symbol of Criticism
“What’s One Piece?” asked my mom after watching some youtube videos on the latest country’s craze on One Piece.
In Indonesia, some people raise the One Piece Flag, that black flag with skull and straw hat on it. This pirate emblem has become some type of symbol to protest the government. Although I failed to see how it could relate to the resistance, even my mom was curious enough about it.
Rather than watching the anime, I proposed to my mom that we watch the Netflix adaption One Piece (2023) . While I watched parts of it a long time ago, I was up to refresh the story of Monkey D Luffy and his ambition to become the King of The Pirates and trying to see why the symbolism came to be and why a lot of young people in the country display the One Piece flag.
The Netflix adaptation gives quite a bit of background on why Luffy became who he is. It serves well as an introduction especially for those who never follow this famous franchise. For my mom who eventually watched the series, she eventually learned about some of the main characters in the series.
Even for me, it was the first time watching the live action. To me, Luffy itself is a bit of a complex character. You know, at first I thought he was just a kid with a harsh life and without a notable background but later in the series, you can see his family lineage that he’s connected through notable admirals like Garp. However, it seems like despite such lineage, he even went against his grandfather who wanted him to work for the marine and has this ultimate goal to find that One Piece.
As of now, that One Piece hasn’t been found yet and from what I know, even the story is on-going and who knows if One Piece is not really a thing but merely symbolic.
The netflix adaption gives me the impression it was made with quite a bit of a high budget. The graphic and visual were aesthetically pleasing. For some reason, it was the colors that were striking. But to my mom and I, we cared more about the story and finding out why it became a symbol of critique in the country.
When we unveiled layers of it, there were a couple intriguing to us. There’s this idea of generalization by the marine that all pirates must be terminated but that’s not the whole truth. There are pirates that can be considered “good” even though the morality of the pirates can be something that is a little gray. From what I know, Luffy works within some code of conduct. He cares about his crew, he has this compass within him that actually guides his action. Even to me, the show was written in an interesting way. By that I mean, the character is not the typical hero that we tend to get in series/animation. There’s inherent flaws about it and the struggles to be in places where bad pirates are the norm.
But to connect it to the whole ruckus in the country, some people believed that the plot is similar to what’s been happening in the country.
Perhaps there's a connection between the two but perhaps not. The One Piece universe is too big and most importantly, I applaud the writer for writing such a masterpiece. If you haven't watched the live action, I definitely suggest that you should!
And season too is about to be released too!
If you are following one piece the anime it will make you a better man (person) I mean person. It will teach you the patience as you wait for the next season to drop, self control as you resist the urge to blow a hole through the TV while watching a flashback you've seen million times, Bear through mundane things in life like the filler arcs.. I am not lying there are 3-4 episodes back to back with character running through the hallway.
Love action on the other hand is ok. 😅
Go for the live action because watching 1100+ episodes at this point is too much.
As for symbolism, what can I say. They portrayed a govt organisation as villian which is under control of a shadow. Ofcourse people are loving it seeing how it's based on the real life. 😂
I saw watch the anime casually, set a limit for yourself of 1 or 2 episodes a day hahaha
That would still take 2 years 😂
I finish the wano arc it's was awesome. The egghead arc is the one in my watchlist now. Hopefully I will catch up by the year end. 😅
I care less about the action but the script is just so well-written. I think you could dive deep into this anime and there are too many layers to it. You could connect it to so many possibilities and everything is just boundless. Maybe that one piece is just a concept.
I have no issues with the writing it's that the anime is slow that's all. 😅
My biggest concern is usually when the writer are writing so well they end up cornering themselves and suddenly it's about powerups and power of friendship or some bullshit as ending note. Hopefully one-piece is not applying for that club.
I think that essentially the World Government in One Piece embodies Order and Pirates symbolize Freedom/Chaos. They are two different frameworks to navigate the world and neither is good or bad, both are subject to the selfish and selfless drives of the people who work within the frameworks. When either Order or Freedom/Chaos have too much power, things tend to go badly for everyone.
Order is stagnant and hard to change. If something is rotten, it's going to be way harder to fix it. Freedom/Chaos is more fluid, easier to fix, but also easier to destroy. There is hope in Freedom.
Spiderman or maybe his aunt said "With great power comes great responsibility". I think One Piece is saying "With great freedom comes great responsibility", we deserve freedom but we need to be decent and have the resolve and will to maintain it.
The idea is to bring all the islands together through food, alcohol and friendship, not through force, manipulation and coercion. Piracy could lead to the best or worst outcomes, but The World Government only wants to maintain the status quo, which doesn't work well for most people..
The anime is too damn long but it's way better than the live action. Luffy is such a brilliant protagonist. I hated One Piece until I realized how symbolic it is both politically and spiritually. I consider it as important as religious text and I'm not even joking.
I remember the interaction between Luffy and Koby. Koby wants to be a good marine and Luffy wants to be a good pirate 😄though I haven't watched the whole story but I get the gist Koby is just that one guy who eventually became the villain, emphasizing the idea that our environment shapes who we become.
I also think that pursuit of nearly impossible goals that drives the crew and somehow makes them responsible?
It's like never-ending pursuit and even who knows if One piece is truly exist. I mean, knowing that they have immense power, Luffy could've just gone astray, be lazy, maybe even a tyrant and ended up being the stereotypical pirate. But he's set on that one goal that keeps him on the line and from what I see, he has this unyielding willpower.
No wonder @inuke said it'll teach us to become a better person 😂let's say we want to be the richest person on earth. You can say it all but who know you'll get closer to those dreams, just like Luffy and the crews. It might not be easy but it's worth the journey.
I don’t think Koby will end up being a villain. They might have one final fight though before they make peace between the world govt and pirates. I think that’d be a cool ending.
Having a vision and goal is also a main point of ONE PIECE. But if you look, Luffy never betrays himself. He is consistent to who he is. He doesn’t care about being a hero but he always is because he believes everyone should have food and freedom. He doesn’t care about how he is perceived at all but he will start a war just to protect a single person’s right to food and freedom. He doesn’t compromise on that.
And what would you say if you know that there was a moment in the series when an actual path to the One-piece was offered to Luffy but he chose to ignore it. 😅
And going by your example I wouldn't have passed on the chance to be the richest person in the world. 😂LOL!! You have tobe a different level of crazy. ☮️♥️
I think one piece is all about finding the way in the gray. When both the system fails. The black and white logic no longer works. There are pirate like Arlong, crocodile and kaido. And there are marine like the axehand, Magma and the impeldown guy. Worst or the worst.
It's all about the personal choices and what do we stand for. I mean look at the 9 samurais of wano (minus the backstabber) just to fulfill their duties they waited and roam different parts of the world. While loyal supporters of Oden waited for the justice for years and were doing silent protest.
I think the point of the show is that it's a F-ed world and people needs to find their own path to fulfill their lives and dreams.
Well said!
It’s hard to put it exactly into words because I think ONE PIECE symbolizes so much that is connected to real life. When I read what you said it just feels like you are talking about life. I am so happy about the flag being used like that in Indonesia. I want to start flying the flag too

I've never really dived into One Piece before, I've seen a few of the first few episodes but never enough to really get into it and understand it. I do want to, but the sheer number of episodes really stops me. I think I'd rather give that a chance again than the Netflix stuff though.
It's even still on-going right now and I would definitely suggest just watch the Live action. It faithfully follows the original one. You can finish it in one day hahaha
no he visto el anime al ver cuanto capítulos tiene bueno no sabia si verla jeje, pero un live action habria que darle la oportunidad jeje buen post
I haven't seen the anime when I saw how many chapters it has, well I didn't know whether to watch it hehe, but a live action should be given the opportunity hehe good post
