「 Ordinary Objects in Extraordinary Light 」

| Fir trees, Barb wires, Mosque, Coffee |

Sometimes an object doesn’t have to be too complicated.
Visual Alchemy

At times, some random object around us when framed in a certain way can be elevated into a pleasant photo to look at. Being creative and seeing our surroundings in a new light then frame it, is one of the ways to exercise our skill. More often than not, I see beauty in random things but not everyday I bring a camera with me. The only time when I do is when I am going out on a trip, hanging out at a coffee shop as well as when I am completely a stranger in a country/province.

Yesterday, I was with a friend of mine doing cafe hopping from one place to another. I also just got back from a spontaneous weekend adventure with my parents. That’s why my camera was stored inside my bags and carried around. I had no intention of taking pictures, until we visited a cafe called “ Rg” where I frequent. In that cafe, they have backyard areas with a few seating options. Somehow, it was never appealing to me prior to my visit with my friend.

Yet, because we felt sleepy inside the cafe, we ended up sitting in the backyard. It just stopped raining and we saw a few youngsters having fashion photo shoots for their merch. Somehow, I was really drawn to these fir trees that remind me of these cool snowy shots in the EU but sadly, I live in the tropics. So the fir is quite different, it’s drenched in rain.

In that backyard they have a few iconic plants that adorned their space as well as well-lit areas and tables. I never knew that it’s interesting just to sit in their backyard and see it in a new light. I usually opt in their AC room and on my laptop for hours and end.

From their backyard, they have this wide angle view that we can see the mosque and there’s barbed wires surrounding the wall. It makes aesthetic photos when you frame it in a certain way. These are some of the results that came out of that.

Mosque & tower

The mosque tower with its megaphones also makes a great object. With the natural lighting that’s not overpowering and the soft blue sky, it makes my camera blur the background a lot easier than when it’s too sunny. These are the results from the mosque and the mosque tower.

Fir trees

The fir was my favorite object in that area. It was drenched in rain making it look pretty aesthetic. I wished I was able to get closer to that spot since it was located on the ‘ no stepping’ ground. I wish I had those telephoto lenses to capture the water drop since they make pretty interesting photos as well. Unfortunately, my camera is way limited and only captured a little of the drops.

Coffee
The Backyard Canvas

The last one that I was experimenting with at their table is this half empty coffee drink. I told my friend that the table is perfect for product photo shoots. It’s probably why these youngsters do their photo shoots there. The photo is also very clear because of the ivory table and the lighting around the areas.

When I showed the result to my friend, he commented that the fir reminded him of the windows background back in the day. I really wasn’t expecting to do any shoot, especially when I visited another cafe earlier, the staff told me they don’t allow professional cameras.

It was weird because I wasn’t really intending to take pictures. Somehow in some establishment around here, they are fine with people taking pictures on the phone but not a professional camera. Even carrying a bulky camera feels like a crime sometimes. While it was not my first time being subjected like that, it’s the ambiguous ground that people here go around about.

I definitely don't want to go back to that place anymore. It’s really strange when a lot of people flash their phone and take pictures all the time. A bulky camera isn’t some sort of scary ghost that I carried around. The best thing I can do is definitely blacklisting these places that get paranoid when I just casually bring my camera visibly.

Hello dear friend @macchiata good morning
I loved this photo session you did, the cover shot is really beautiful.
How great that you went on a spontaneous trip with your parents, thanks to them you took your camera with you.
What you say is true, here in my city the same thing happens, it is common to see people taking photographs everywhere with their phone and no one is surprised, but when you take pictures with a camera, everyone looks at you as if you are invading their privacy, It is incredible to see the level of susceptibility of people
Beautiful shots, appreciate you sharing this experience.
Have a happy start to the week

Thank you, I was confused what to pick for the cover but that frangipani flower, you can never go wrong with that.

I didn't know that is also a thing over there but looks like it's pretty universal problem. While to be fair, it's a lot extra steps for a camera than smartphone camera to be published out there. I am going to be a lot less apologetic especially when I am in the mood for arguing but more often than not, just not going back to the place helps too.

The flowers are beautiful. The barbed wires look nice as a subject. Many establishments are like that, they think having a DSLR camera means you're a professional photographer and you're taking photos for commercial purposes. And there were some temples in Myanmar, where you need to pay a fee if you were taking photos with DSLR. weird.

I hate that it's happening in Indonesia too. Whenever you bring a pro-looking camera even it's a prosumer, they instantly think that they have the need to charge you more. I went to a few places where they charge me more than $5 just because I was bringing a camera. It's so weird when these days people can upload pictures right away on social media and who knows, if they're instantly earning from that too. Thanks for checking this one out :)
