Morning everyone!

Are you dependent on ChatGPT?

The other day, ChatGPT was down. I read a few tweets that sounded concerned because it was out of service . It seems people can’t live without it and have been totally dependent on it for a lot of reasons. I find it a little more interesting when an academia influencer mentioned it too and was concerned of it being down. This person seems to also advocate the use of ChatGPT to assist in academic writing.

Welcome to my brain dump, it’s morning and when I am able to sit down, sipping a cup of coffee while contemplating about life and emptying it out a little.

Am I the one finding it a little concerning or have I been brainwashed to think ChatGPT is bad and shouldn’t be used for anything academic related? Even more so, if more people start claiming the work of AI as theirs? Well, beats me but these days after having to read so many posts in my day-to-day life, I can really tell a blatant AI made title vs a personal title that you’re making it on your own. That is just a tiny example of what I picked up since ChatGPT was released. Then, sometimes I wonder, to what extent is the use of AI allowed?

My friends who work professionally as copywriters even use AI. In the past, none of this would have happened and things would have been done manually. Though, from a business perspective, why would we hire copywriters and pay them hefty amounts when AI can do it faster and perhaps, better too?

When I asked my younger friend who is still in college, she told me that she uses AI to understand an academic paper better. It is used to help her summarize the paper and she would analyze it on her own. That being said, she also used it especially if the paper was written in English. Back in the day, all of these were manual work and required a lot more effort. Reflecting on my own experience, I had to twist my hair to think of the best possible way to summarize a story in just a couple of sentences but these days, with just one click or a prompt, AI can do it faster. Will we reach faster to idiocracy like civilization?

Personally, ChatGPT works like an assistant. Ever since it came out, I love how it was able to personalized a schedule and some set of routine for me. With my ever changing sleep pattern, it helps with planning and estimating the time I have to do tasks. My favorite prompts is definitely something along these lines;

Plan me a schedule if I am productive at 7 AM and have to wake up at 3 AM

It would show me the no-nonsense schedule and I typically would customize it on my own, matching what I need based on the timing estimates. Other than that, I typically wouldn’t use it. Even when people use ChatGPT as their personal search engine, I still love manual search on my browser and do some dorking with the result. I have to say though, recently google indexing is pretty awful with e-commerces are on top of the page and other articles aren’t really shown on the main page. I suppose, the SEO specialists of these e-commerce companies really work hard to get it indexed by Google on the top pages. That being said, if ChatGPT is down, I wouldn’t really care.

Social media in excess….

Lately I find myself scrolling over instagram a little too much. In the past, I was gone from that site and never really looked back until I started traveling and had the need to have an account. It gets more interesting because from there, I was able to reconnect with my high school friends and the friends from college that I no longer see in my day-to-day life. I also have them contact the pet shop I frequent and the cafes I normally go to. Rather than giving them my personal number, I seem to find a lot more use on instagram to contact cafes and shops.

However, the catch is that instagram can be a little more intriguing. It’s easy to scroll and even if you’re like me who follow mostly political news, it all gets a little too interesting. Then, lately I found myself having another information overload moment and feeling like I wasted time on it.

Though I have set a 15 minutes only timer on my account, sometimes I still hit the “not now” button and continue scrolling the news. I only realized time flies sometimes and I got so caught up with all these. I am not so much of a mobile phone person, sometimes I could care so less about my phone that I won’t be charging it for a day. I couldn’t say the same with my laptop though. Anyway, just like what the common wisdom is, social media in excess is bad for us and everything should be in moderation.

Anyway, my coffee is running out & that is my today’s brain dump!

ooh! that's one way to use it,I think. I am personally not a fan but that seems like something people use from time to time.

Chatgpt is my assistant in academic writing. It helps a lot with my structure and makes my writing process shorter.

That's the same case with most students I met these days. For me, it helps understanding how a code works too but I am trying to be less dependent on it 😂 ngl, it helps a lot with studying though.

The AI tools are helpful in many respects but I think we need to strike a balance with them. We can’t rely on them to do everything for us because that makes us lazy and really hurts our brains power overall. There’s something to be said about efficiency but we still need to use our brains for actual work and deep thought!

I think many things can be addicting but they design the algorithms of these sites to be as addicting as sugar, it’s pretty wild! I’m glad I don’t use those platforms but know that they are powerful.

basically that, it's what separates human and AI thus far. Maybe AI is faster in terms of memory recalling but I find life has a lot of morally grayness that everything is up to debate. I am not aware if there are test for morality on them but I am sure someone has done that on them.

Over here, because we're developing nation and pretty much influenced with chinese money, people are using it for their shops and information on closing/opening time. So, it has its own usage and not really the "flexing" type of social media.

In fact, interestingly, if we want a policy to get applied faster, we can simply tag lawmakers on instagram and they'd do something about it faster than if we're using whatsapp or e-mail 😂 the same thing happened with most government services here. I get more reply on instagram than contacting them via e-mail
